Question: piercings??

I just wanted to know if one has a tongue or lip piercing can they perform salat and can they fast during ramadan?

From what I know, the permissibility of adornments such as piercings is that the harm should not override the benefit. If that happens, it becomes prohibited for that person as they are causing damage to themselves. For instance, with any piercing, initially, an infection is likely to occur. If such problems persist, the permissibility is void. So, if the person in question has already passed this stage, logic would have you believe that it is okay to pray with it, and fast with it.

There are many things that can break a fast or reduce its reward, but the main argument is that, in terms of consumption, it should be food, something likely to give you energy. That is why adornments such as kohl or facial creams, which are always debated, are not prohibited during the fasting period as they are not swallowed or consumed as such. Similarly, the piercing is not swallowed, and because it is only in contact with the surface of the skin, it is not categorised as something that can break the fast.
