Piety in Personal Life

The Prophet (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) said, “Live immaculately both personal life and social life.” [Minhaaj us-Saaliheen]

When the shadow of darkness would spread and everyone fell asleep, Imam Zain ul-Abideen (rehimatullahu) the son of the Prophet’s grandson Hussain (radi Allahu anhu) would get up. He put some food in a sack and carry it on his shoulders to the houses of the poor, especially those who hesitated to beg. His original name was Ali. “Zain ul-Abideen” (Ornament of the worshipers of Allah) was a title conferred on him because of his consciousness of Allah (subhana wa ta’ala).

Despite becoming rich through trade, he was humble and utilized his wealth as a means to attain eternal success. His specialty was secret charity. From him, many poor people of Medina used to receive food daily. Yet, they never found out that it was Zain ul-Abideen (rehimatullahu) who gives them food until he passed away and that anonymous man never came to them anymore. It was then that they found out that their anonymous caretaker had been the Prophet’s grandson! When Zain ul-Abideen was being given his funeral bath, a thick dark scar was seen on his back. When people asked about it, someone revealed, “It is the scar from the sacks of flour that Imam used to carry to the poor of Medina during the middle of every night. With his demise, those poor lost their caretaker too.”

There are two ways through which our moments of leisure can be made valuable.
The first is through self evaluation and introspection. A cautious lifestyle in which one examines what one has said to others and desired, is the best way to attain inner purification. Scrutiny of oneself at lonely moments helps wash away the dirt that latches on during the course of life.
The second way to make your moments of leisure valuable is through good deeds. When nobody is around to know or applaud, we can perform good deeds purely for Allah’s happiness, thinking about Him alone and not desiring anything from anybody but Him.

What crosses our minds when we are alone? What is craved and done then?

In secluded moments, if our minds crave evil, they are obviously in need of strong guidance. Fearfulness and devotion towards the Almighty is more likely experienced in personal moments.
Make lonely moments significant - with good deeds, self evaluation and beneficial desires!

الحمدلله على كل حال
Wa`alaykum as-salaam wa rahmatullaahi wa barakaatuh,

Quite the contrary for me though. What crosses my mind when I am alone? Well I tend to think about deep and big issues when I am alone. Trying to seek the wisdom behind everything although the hikmah isn't reachable every time. Guess it's just weird me.
