Assalamu Alaikum Brothers and sisters.

I am a Software Engineer from Sri Lanka and am
considering migration to Melbourne Australia with my
wife and two kids. I have certain questions in mind.

What's the situation in Melbourne for practicing Muslims?
Is there any special place where Muslims live? So I can
find an apartment in the Muslim community.

My wife is wearing full hijab and she will definitely have to go out
for day to day activities once we move. For Example to take the child
to school (he's just 3 years now and the younger one is 3 months old now).
And she would have to spend the day time alone at home.

And Would I have to face any kind of discrimination when
finding a job in the field ?

Please advice me. very much appriciate if you can tell me where you are
from as well.

These worries are sort of troubling me to take the decision.

I could not find any Islamic sites where people talk about this kind of
issues faced by Islamic Immigrants. If Any one knows about such a site
please let me know.

Jazakalla for your kind help.

May Allah reward you!
Wassalam

As Salaam Alaykum AKhi,

Could I ask Why are you planning to migrate to Australia.

Why can't you try to migrate to some Muslim Country (like maybe Malaysia, UAE etc wher you can get your kind of job).

Below is website which has detailed info on migration to Muslim Countries.

I live in sydney bro since last year, so I do not know about melbourne but I can give you little insight about Australia in general.

I do not think there will be any discrimination against muslim, okay maybe some but very little, because in Australia we have many Lebanon/south east asian immigrant, so Islam is not very strange things for them. I believe most people are tolerant to islam.

about job. most likely you wont find discrimination, but the problem for every muslim working in non muslim environment is praying jum'ah. you should mention it your employer about it.

In sydney we have islamic school for children, thus your children can still have good education in islamic way.

If you want to immigrate here that's good, according to Australian Bureau of Statistics the unemployment rate reached the lowest level in 30 years (http://www.abs.gov.au/), but the biggest problem now is increasing rate o interest rate and high cost of accomodation.

but if it's up to me I prefer my own country (indonesia) warm tropical country with masjid and halal food in every corner. happiness can not be measure by monetary value ^_^

Jazakallah,

But what about social security and the dress code of the wife. Are there many people around wearing hijab?

What about leaving my wife alone during day time when I go to work ?

Thanks in advance

What do you mean by that??

No, only small number of people, but i think it would be your problems rather than your wife's problem :SMILY286:

What do you mean by that??, are you afraid someone are going to steal your wife?
Thanks in advance
Anytime bro

Dear Brother,

I don't think you should have any worries. Surely in a big city like Melbourne, there must be an Islamic centre and plenty of Muslim families. I have never been to Australia but have met many Australians in Europe where I grew up and they seem to be nice people so I hope you receive a warm welcome if you make this move. Does your wife speak English by any chance? Also, she will not be entirely alone at home if she has a little one or two to look after, as you indicated, but it would help to know some Muslim sisters, to not feel isolated.

Also, please contact AFIC, Australian Federation of Islamic Councils, they have a website and may be able to help you. I googled Melbourne and mosque and came up with a mosque in West Melbourne. Some of the links brought me to stories of discrimination or targeting of muslims/mosques in Melbourne which I was unaware of (but it seems these were mainly shortly after 9/11 or the bombings in Bali that killed a lot of Australian tourists). There is also a mosque called Virgin Mary Mosque in the suburbs of Melbourne, for your interest.

Assalamo alikom wa rahmato Allah wa barakato

We migrated nearly a year ago, not precisely to Melbourne, but to South Australia. I have seen some programes and have talked to people living there and my conclusion is that is one of the cities with the strongest islamic communities in Oz, apart from Sydney.

I live in a small city (around 20.000 people) with no islamic community whatsoever(not even one mosque), but I still do wear my hijab and go shopping with no problems Alhamdulillah.

You should not worry about it, if you think it's the best decision and after making istikhara, go for it. EnshaAllah you and your family will be alright.

Allah knows best.
