2. Tadhabbur (pondering) over the Quran
From the means of achieving al-Fiqah is to ponder over the Quran. So, whenever you read the Quran, you should ponder upon its meaning; - what is the meaning of this verse? What is the meaning of this word?
This does not mean that you invent (the meaning) from yourself - this is not permissible —rather you should refer to the authentic trustworthy books of Tafseer —and then you will know the meaning of the verses, the meaning of the Saying of Allah.
Similarly, you will (also) know the meaning of the sayings of Allah's Messenger if you read the Ahadeeth. It is not enough that you simply read the words and briefly go through them —rather you must achieve the Fiqh (understanding) of its meaning, and know the intent of the Prophet in every word, and in every Hadeeth —but do not invent (your own meaning). Rather, refer to the books of Sharh —i.e., Sharh (interpretation) of the Ahadeeth - and increase your reading of Fiqh, Aqeedah and language books.
3. Asking the scholars
From the means of achieving Ilm - after much revision of the books —is asking the people of knowledge. You have to ask the people of knowledge, Allah says, "So ask of those who know the Scripture, if you know not." [Soorah an-Nahl (16): 43]
and the Messenger (salallahu alaihi wasallam) said,
"…Shouldn't they have asked if they didn't know?! Verily the cure of all ignorance is to ask!" [Abu Dawood]
Al-Haya' (shyness) should not prevent you from asking, because Haya' which deters one from asking people of knowledge is not praised —rather, it is cowardice, weakness and failure.
(Also,) Takabbur (arrogance) should not hinder you from asking the people of knowledge. For, some people deem that asking the scholars will diminish their position —but, the truth is asking people for worldly issues and wealth is prohibited except in the case of necessity and only as much as is required.
As for asking the scholars (about religious issues) —this is desirable - unless if the question was for the purpose of annoyance or arrogance —this is not permissible. So, he, who asks the scholars in order to make matters difficult or to show-off, then this is not permissible.
When Abdullah ibn Abbas (radhi allahu anhuma) was asked, "How did you achieve this Ilm?"
He replied,
بلسان سؤول و قلب عقول
"With a tongue that questions, and a heart that understands."
'With a tongue that questions'
means, 'asking ample questions to the people of knowledge.'
'A heart that understands'
means, 'to understand and comprehend that which is said.'
In this way, knowledge is achieved —little by little.
Mujahid ibn Jabar, the Taba'ee (rahimahullah) said,
إن هذا العلم لا يناله مستح ولا مستكبر
"Verily this knowledge is neither achieved by the timid nor the arrogant." [Saheeh al-Bukharee, the Book of Ilm, Chapter: Hayaa' in Ilm]
