Sumatra Island has been hit by two strong earthquakes. The affected region is 660 miles west of Jakarta. The 6.3 quakes were felt as far away as Singapore and Malaysia where some tall buildings were evacuated. Singapore is 263 miles from the epicenter. There have been a number of aftershocks, some reached about 6.0. About 70 people have been killed so far, hundreds of buildings have been flattened, and many roads have been severely damaged. The death toll is expected to rise as news is still coming in from remote areas and many people are trapped under debris.
