goodness, i wish i could remember the issuer of the fatwa that i read some years ago on this topic. the shaykh had said that it was haram to pray in a place with idols present or openly present. he said that the idols would have to be covered if there was no other way around it. but he recommended simply not to pray in that place. since this a public prayer room, you most likely won't win the argument for wanting to place the idols somewhere else or cover them. perhaps, you and some of the other muslims that attend this prayer room can establish salah somewhere else on campus. outside maybe? remember, you only need 2 muslims to form a congregation; i believe.

i knew somali muslims that worked in a factory out in colorado, that worked quite a distance from the nearest masjid, but alhamdulillah there were over 50 muslims at this plant and were able to pray jummah at work because so many muslims worked there. who knows maybe this situation can help you establish a muslim group that can in turn come up with their own place of prayer? maybe ALLAH SWT could be using you for this?

Al Bukhari Volume 2 Number 671
Narrated Ibn Abbas

When Allah's Apostle came to Mecca, he refused to enter the Ka'ba with
idols in it. He ordered (idols to be taken out). So they were taken out.
The people took out the pictures of Abraham and Ishmael holding
Azlams in their hands. Allah's Apostle said, "May Allah curse these
people. By Allah, both Abraham and Ishmael never did the game of
chance with Azlams." Then he entered the Ka'ba and said Takbir at its
corners but did not offer the prayer in it.

Al Bukhari Volume 5 Number 584

Narrated Ibn Abbas

When Allah's Apostle arrived in Mecca, he refused to enter the Ka'ba
while there were idols in it. So he ordered that they be taken out. The
pictures of the (Prophets) Abraham and Ishmael, holding arrows of
divination in their hands, were carried out. The Prophet said, "May Allah
ruin them (i.e. the infidels) for they knew very well that they (i.e.
Abraham and Ishmael) never drew lots by these (divination arrows)."
Then the Prophet entered the Ka'ba and said. "Allahu Akbar" in all its
directions and came out and did not offer any prayer therein.
