As Salaamu 'Alaykum wa Rahmatu Allaah.
I noticed in one of the post replies that people can often forget about prioritizing the matters that they call people to about Islaam. When somebody is interested in Islaam and he mentions that he drinks alcohol or has a girlfriend (or vice versa), you don't first go and tell them that drinking alcohol is forbidden or having girl-boy relations are forbidden. This is ignorance of prioritizing the call.
The very first thing you call the people to is the Tahweed of Allaah (the unique oneness of Allaah). The Prophet (salla Allaahu 'alayhy wa sallam) said to Mu'aath ibni Jabal when he sent him to Yemen:
إنك تقدم على قوم من أهل الكتاب فليكن أول ما تدعوهم إلى أن يوحدوا الله تعالى فإذا عرفوا ذلك فأخبرهم أن الله قد فرض عليهم خمس صلوات في يومهم وليلتهم فإذا صلوا فأخبرهم أن الله افترض عليهم زكاة في أموالهم تؤخذ من غنيهم فترد على فقيرهم فإذا أقروا بذلك فخذ منهم وتوق كرائم أموال الناس
“You will be going to Christians and Jews, so the first thing you should invite them to is the assertion of the oneness of Allaah, Most High. If they realize that, then inform them that Allaah has made five daily prayers obligatory on them. If they pray them, then inform them that Allaah has made the payment of charity from their wealth obligatory on their rich to be given to their poor. If they accept that, then take it from them and avoid the best part of people’s property.” (Agreed Upon, and the wording is of Bukhaaree)
This is not necessarily for Jews and Christians. We can see how the Prophet (salla Allaahu 'alayhy wa sallam) prioritized the matters to which Mu'aath should call the non-Muslims to. Of course, if the non-Muslim begins his post with a question, you answer their question but you try to ultimately link it back to the Tawheed (oneness) of Allaah because that is the foundation of the Deen and is what sets Islaam apart and unique from all the other religions out there.
