Question about Raffle

:salam2: all,

I recently bought a $1 raffle ticket from a little girl who was selling tickets to raise money for the Child Life DayCare center at my college. The purpose of the fund-raising was to keep the center open for the children of student parents so that they could leave their children there while they went to their classes. Now I actually ended up winning a gourmet basket but then I remembered that participating in games of chance is haram. However, someone else later told me that it depends on the cause of the raffle; in this case since I donated money for the betterment and welfare of a children's center, she said it wasn't haram and that many masjids also have raffles in order to raise money for religious causes.

So what I want to know is if my gourmet basket is haram for me to keep based on the fact that although I won it from a raffle, the cause was a good one.

Good Question

:salam2:

Thats actually a really good question. I'm curious to find the exact answer for this question as well. In my opinion, I don't think it is because it was for a good cause. In regular lottery, it's for business purposes, but in your case it was completly diffrent. It was Zakat (charity). So I highly doubt it's considered haram in your case. Inshallah you'll find the answer.

You know if worst comes to worst you could always give it to charity. That way you would be doing two deeds of charity.
