Islaam as a Way of Life
Wa 'alaykum as Salaam wa Rahmatu Allaahi wa Barakaatuhu.
What is generally understood by the term "religion" is a set of rituals dealing with the spiritual life of a person away from his material life. Islaam, on the other hand, deals with every single aspect of a person's life regulating all areas of life like spirituality, manners, speech, behavior, food, relations, family, society, politics, law, and all the other areas included.
Islaam does not relate only to the individual's life alone, but to the society as a whole. When Islaam is established in a country, Zakaah eliminates poverty and reduces the rate of theft significantly. Interest and usury are forbidden so business is kept fair. Alcohol is forbidden reducing tons of crimes like car accidents, homicide, etc. Sexual relations outside of marriage are strictly forbidden keeping the society clean and protecting the family structure which forms the basis of the society. Justice is kept throughout the country so that the poor is not wronged for the sake of the rich. And the list goes on.
As for the individual's life, the person tries to perform all his actions under the guidelines set by Allaah. He seeks the pleasure of Allaah even in his regular activities by directing his intention to Him. He keeps his speech and his behavior good and away from vain talk and inappropriate actions. He helps people for the sake of Allaah. He doesn't commit crimes for the fear of Allaah. If a person refrains from doing crimes for the sake of Allaah, they will keep this behavior no matter where they are. Whereas, if they do that for fear of a person or the authority in a country, they will commit it when they are away from that authority.
In short, Islaam provides the perfect way for a person to make the ultimate purpose of their actions to seek the pleasure of Allaah and the rewards of the Hereafter.
