ramadan, new muslims

salam aleykum
if for some reason u dont fast one day in ramadan and u do it after ramadan but before the next do u have to fast just once day or u have to fast several days for this one day u didnt fast?

like for many converts new muslims it can be difficuld when live in a kafir family before they even know ure a muslim.
