"Man and Money" is probably one of the best books to understand the monetary system, the problems with interest and its alternatives. It was written by Shaikh Mahmood Ahmad in 1960s (if I am not wrong). It's a must read for students of islamic economics. To my utter surprise a polish website is offering it to read online.

I have not read the book in full myself but I have heard some lectures introducing the concept of "Time multiple counter loan", which is an alternative proposed by Shaikh Mahmood Ahmad.
