Reading Quran in gatherings. "khatam" "Qura0n khaani"??

What is a khatam and why is it wrong?

Here, we have people sometimes call others over for a "prayer gathering" where everyone chips in to read a juz of the Quran, and then they read the whole Quran silently to themselves, but together. Its called a "Quraan khaani" here. Then, when a person dies, sometimes when others go for condolence there, people are sitting reading Quran, some are doing tasbeeh. Is this right or wrong?

I need complete info on it, so I can reason with others to stop it if its wrong.

:salam2:,

mashallah good question but very complex also. there are many things to be told:

1. Khatm: reading Quran for the deceased person.

2. it was not practiced by prophet :saw: and sahaba (ra),

3. there is difference of opinion about reciting Quran to transfer its reward to the dead person. many say its innovation.

4. BUT...reciting it only on thursdays or 3rd, 7th, 40th day.
blowing on the food, making it compulsory to eat frm it. reciting yaseen 36 times, etc. its all innovation (bidah).

5. the focus of muslims have shifted frm fard duties to voluntary ones. also in many of these gatherings, there is useless talks, backbiting, men-women mixing, etc.

Brother Ahmed has provided evidence for the answer.

Here in Maldives, its much worse than that even. But Alhamdhulillah now, with the help of Scholars in the country, the practicing of those bad innovations are decreasing.

I wonder why we are so strong in doing innovations like celebrating Prophet's birthday, celebrating and specialising 15th of this month, celebrating 40 days after death of one, etc etc.

Quran is a book which is full of lessons and instructions for the one while he is living. When he is dead, how can he act upon what he hears?

Moreover, if we read the translation of Surah Yaseen, we will know that it is a Surah with lots and lots of commands and instructions to follow.

Even they are so strong in doing it basing upon a Da'eef Hadith, while keeping on leaving Fard Prayers. Laa Ilaaha Illallah! Is is not better for them to Pray atleast 5 times a day, basing upon Quranic Verses and Authentic Hadith of Prohet (sallallahu 'alaihi wasallam)?

What a sadness on this Ummah! What a sadness on this Ummah!

Ya Rab! Forgive me..
On the same topic....
We were taught that every Thursday night the souls of the dead ask Allah (SAW), What have my children suplicated for me... Then Allah will tell them and they will respond - let their reward be the same...
So we were encouraged to pray at least Surah Yaseen on behalf of the dead....

ANYONE EVER HEARD OF THIS?
