"Rest in Peace"

Assalamu alaykum

I pray everyone is doing fine

My non-muslim friend's uncle passed away. I left her a comment saying, may he "rest in peace". Was that okay?...knowing he is a non-muslim? It would have been mean if I didnt say anything.
What a crazy question...sorry.

The only thing I could think of to say was I will pray to Allah to ease everyone's sorrow. May they rest in peace seems like an alright thing to say. I know everyone always says they are in a better place now. But we cannot say that because only Allah knows where they are.
