Asslamo Allaikum Brother,
Many of us on this forum have grown up in the West and have inadvertently taken certain values to heart without ever questioning the validity or reason of them.
Most of us have extensive experience with girlfriends so don’t worry about it!
The ‘negative' connotations in the reply were not posted to make you feel bad about yourself, rather they were given to make you (and many others) broaden the horizons and look BEYOND conventional wisdom and norms.
We, as humans in general and Muslims in particular must thoroughly evaluate the accepted norms of the society i.e. we mustn’t be either partisaned or biased!
As previously stated that the issue of taking slaves was thoroughly discussed in the 80’s during Afghan-Russian war and no slaves were taken and it was the opinion of majority of the Scholars of Muslims that “conditions “weren’t fulfilled.
Now, I am not knowledgeable enough to categorically state what the conditions are; nevertheless taking slaves is permissible in Islam and it is not a simple matter of taking a woman and cohabiting with her! You can’t cohabit with a slave girl if her husband is around!
