Sarah Joseph on Countering Muslim Stereotypes
British activist and Emel editor, Sarah Joseph
At the end of the day, there are Muslim women who are oppressed. But this is not an exclusively Muslim phenomenon.
There are women all over the world living in difficult situations. Domestic violence for example in the United Kingdom and in the United States is statistically correlated to sports. When England loses a football match, people would get drunk and would beat their wives. That doesn’t mean that all football supporters beat their wives.
There is a statistical correlation between losing a match, alcohol, and beating your wife. It doesn’t mean we ban football or have prejudices towards football. So there are all sorts of things that go on.
But is Islam intrinsically violent?
We have Muslims who commit violence in the name of Islam. We have all sorts of wackos all over the world who would do things in all sorts of names. We know for example if the Ku Klux Klan does something racial or racist or violent in the name of Christianity, and still thinks it comes from a Christian tradition, we know that this is not real because we are sure of what Christian tradition is.
But we are not yet sure of what Muslim tradition is because we have engaged with Muslims, we have engaged with the Muslim texts, on a prejudice basis. We have not really looked at the history of all the civilizations and impacts they had over time.
So all these prejudices flourish in our fears and our phobias, they flourish in our subconscious and they flourish within our cultural expressions as well.
