''A Muslim cleric in Saudi Arabia has called on women to wear a full veil, or niqab, that reveals only one eye.

Sheikh Muhammad al-Habadan said showing both eyes encouraged women to use eye make-up to look seductive.

The question of how much of her face a woman should cover is a controversial topic in many Muslim societies.

The niqab is more common in Saudi Arabia and the Gulf, but women in much of the Muslim Middle East wear a headscarf which covers only their hair.

Sheikh Habadan, an ultra-conservative cleric who is said to have wide influence among religious Saudis, was answering questions on the Muslim satellite channel al-Majd.''

Surah An-Noor aya 31

And tell the believing women to lower their gaze (from looking at forbidden things), and protect their private parts (from illegal sexual acts, etc.) and not to show off their adornment except only that which is apparent (like palms of hands or one eye or both eyes for necessity to see the way, or outer dress like veil, gloves, head-cover, apron, etc.), and to draw their veils all over Juyubihinna (i.e. their bodies, faces, necks and bosoms, etc.)

Surah Al-Ahzab aya 59

O Prophet! Tell your wives and your daughters and the women of the believers to draw their cloaks (veils) all over their bodies (i.e.screen themselves completely except the eyes or one eye to see the way). That will be better, that they should be known (as free respectable women) so as not to be annoyed. And Allâh is Ever Oft*!Forgiving, Most Merciful.

I know that in the past muslim women used to wear that kind of khimaar and they used to keep it with the hand to uncover one eye to see the way... subhan'Allah

Salaam,

Ohh, JezakAllah Khair.

I thought it was advised to wear it with both eye's showing or a veil covering both of them, and I didn't know it was menioned in the Glorius Quran.

As-salaamu `alaykum

It's not explicity in the Qur'aan... it is implied (or acted upon). The reason why revealing only an eye is mentioned within the brackets, is because it was the practice of the early Muslims, the salaf to do as such. If you study the explanation and fiqh of those two verses from the Qur'aan, you will find authentic narrations which state clearly that it was from the way of the sahaabiyaat to reveal only one-eye. To illustrate when Muhammad Ibn Sireen, a student of Ibn `Abbaas, was asked about the covering of the Muslim woman that Allaah obligated in the above aayaat, he would respond by covering himself in a manner whereby he would expose only one eye.

See Tafseer Ibn Katheer on the two verses for more information...

Salaam,

Sigh, let's just cause the women to have stigmatisms rather than just expect the men to lower their gaze. (rolls eyes) The covering of one eye is strictly interpretation, it is NOT in the Quran. I found this link a while back where the daleel surrounding the nikaab is examined and I feel a very effective argument that the nikaab is neither wajib nor fardh.

http://www.muhajabah.com/niqabdalils.htm

For some reason the scholars have gone on a nikaab kick recently and are trying to interpret it as wajib/fardh.

This is non-news. The controversy is 1400 years old and we are not going to solve it any time soon. There are strong arguments and recognised scholars on both sides. People may follow what they feel is best. I personally have great admiration for the courage & strength of women who go on to have niqab.

COI: wife & sisters cover hair only.

Assalamu alaykum,

An Important point missed is...

WHY is this News ???????????

There are thousands upon thousands of different Scholars throughout history that gave their opinion on Fiqh issues. Just like, you will find someone giving fatwa about all aspects of life. This is normal.

This just shows the sensationalist working of the BBC. They chose something, which is not news worthy and presented it as news in order to get non-Muslims worked up.

It was simply a Question and Answer session on an Islamic TV Channel ! Women at time of the Prophet :saw:, such as his wives, wore the veil. Some chose to hide their eyes too.
