Schoolwork Issue...

Assalamu alaikum brothers and sisters. For a while I have been having issues with study, particularly in Maths. Since grade 8 and into this year I have been failing all of my exams except for a couple which I have just managed to pass. This is due to a few factors: myself being lazy as instead of studying for Maths I would be web surfing on the computer or be doing some other activity other than my study. The second being the Maths teachers I have had over the years, mainly they haven't been strict on schoolwork, eg: they would rarely check to see if anyone has done homework or if someone hasn't done homework they would just shrug it off by saying something like "Oh well, you're only disadvantaging yourself".

The third being if I haven't understood something that we have been learning most of the time I wouldn't follow it up with the teacher or go into finding the solution by myself. The fourth being that I am simply not interested in Maths because it is usually boring and some of the topics we learn I think have no purpose in learning, eg: with trigonometry I'm not going to use this ever in my life since I don't plan to be a architect or something similar to that.

Today I got a letter from my school saying that I have been placed in the pre-vocational Maths because of my poor record recently with failing exams. I did apply for Maths A which is a better standard of Maths and is required with many career options. However with pre-vocational Maths it'll only limit my options for when I leave school and won't look good for myself in the future such as when I'm applying for a job. My question is how can I become better at Maths with Allah's help and guidance etc? How can I make myself become more interested and committed? Any tips or suggestions on this?

Study.

I do not know the non-American educational systems but you need to take vocational assessments. Find out where your talents are.

And I keep telling everyone we need to focus on many fields that are beneficial to mankind that are not all college related. Even the doctor has to call the plumber when his toilet is clogged.

As long as people drive we need auto mechanics. You may have more practical skills that will give you a good life.

College is not for everyone. And that is not a disgrace.


Expand your horizons. Find out your talents and interests and go with that.

On my resume it states I have expertize in interpreting and giving intelligence tests. Funny thing, there is nothing in the Quran about that.

Seek knowledge but do not limit yourself.

little brother, i feel more of procrastination in ur post than learning problem.

dont ever assume that u will never use math in ur life. math is language of nature. it is straight forward and logical. u can always memorize trig identities if u can not drive them. i recommend that u practice it in ur spare time. there is no way to learn math other than practice. youtube videos can help also.
I used to make my own formulas on mathematica for solving long problems. ah good old days. oh if u wanna know basics go to wolframalpha its very helpful.
u can always pm me if u need help with particular problem.

Appa as always i found ur reply interesting. would u be giving ur son an advice to stop learning math if he fails because he is just lazy and pick up some other major which is easy?

I would say invest in a tutor. I failed 3 maths classes and it was my foundation for higher maths. My first year of college I took a year of remedial math because I did not get tutoring.

I did not imply for him to take the lazy way out.

Let's try it this way: In this crazy economy for many college is not an option. It takes a lot of money. I do not limit intelligence to a college course. That would be stupid. There are many kinds of intelligences. The skills required for college are only a few given all the skills available to man.

I suggested if math is difficult to take vocational assessments to discover his talents. We forget the importance of manual labor..something about each joint doing charity each day...we forget the need for agriculture.

Not every human being needs to be a doctor or an engineer nor an IT person. We need all varieties of skills.

On a deeper level...we have fallen into the trap that a college education is an indication of a good person. And many college degrees are worthless. A college education is not an indicator of a person seeking knowledge. If anything a college education is very limited knowledge in a particular field.

Some people are more practical.

Making an A in math is not the only indicator of intelligence.

By the way..thanks for taking the time to be puzzled by my response. I got you to think in a different light.

As for my sons..we are in the process of making serious decisions. They are studious but very much lazy teens. We are trying to identify career choices. InshaAllah, they will make serious choices but have fun. We will not take loans.

Brother, Maths is the mother of all sciences. Whats interesting about Maths is that you do not need to do lots of reading and memorization, unlike Biology because it only require understanding and of course, lots of exercise.

I actually thought I'm not that much into Maths since I'm not really a studious person anymore, but when I'm able to understand the equations etc, it makes everything more fun.

But yes, Appa's right. If you feel that you really can't cope with Maths, try to find your talent and expand it.

But if you still feel you want to succeed in Maths, I am pretty sure everyone can providing that they do what they need to [Know what I mean?]. You can, and I really believe that.

Okay now to your Schoolwork Issue....
May I know your career option? And did some one say trigonometry is only for Architecture, and biology is only for doctor? Are you not the same one, who felt amazed reading some facts about creation and life and creator

Yes there are some subjects that is beyond one's comprehension skill. But you did choose Maths A, for some reason, you had a plan and an intent to start with. Keep that intent in focus, and bend your back, get back to task in hand, That's what I did , thats what most do, when they realize they are procrastinating.

I beg to differ, Maths, science, Social Science, language are all equally important [in addition to the other human faculties]. Either you have an aptitude for it or not, but they are worth the effort you put.. Each level of education expects a higher standard of base knowledge. How we apply this knowledge together is a matter of our aptitude, attitude, excellence is not just a matter of talent, right?!. Situations come up in life; knowing and not knowing, does the difference. Either we can learn them in school and be aware quicker, or learn them as we grow, or totally miss the chance to be aware n wise, ..... we have just one lifetime! That's what I have realized with time.
