shahada and witness

dear all,

i am a bit confused whether someone who wants to take shahada needs to do it in front of witness/es (muslim) or can one do it by him/her self?
and also if in front of witness/es, how many people does it have to be and is it requred in mosque? maybe any hadith or verse from quran?

Sister one can take shahadah alone with Allah as witness to become a Muslim. But since we live in a society it is preferable to take shahdah in public like in a mosque etc. Doing it in public also make you known to the public at large which helps in many ways.
