Ship of the Heart

by Abu Abdullah Ibne Ismail

“Shaykh Saadi rahmatullahi alayh explains the relationship of man with this world by using the example of a ship. A ship must utilise the water in the ocean to reach its destination.

As long as the water of the ocean stays on the outside, the ship will continue smoothly on its journey. However if the water begins to enter the ship then the ship will ultimately sink and be destroyed

Man’s (heart) is also a ship and his ship’s ocean is this world. As long as he keeps the water (of the love of this world) outside the ship of his heart then he will be able to continue to use the ocean and successfully reach his final destination in the hereafter.

But as soon as his heart’s ship begins to let in the ocean he will sink and perish.

From this we learn that

• The world has been designed for us to use as per need

• We must stay in control of our conveyance (i.e. control how much we become engrossed in and utilise aspects of this world) if we wish to reach our true destination.”
