Social Customs

Hello, firstly, I would like to apologise if I have posted my query in the wrong section of the site, I am new here. I come from a Christo-secular society and I am trying to expand my understanding of Islam as a faith and a tradition.

I am not Islamic nor do I belong to an Islamic culture, therefore, my question is: In traditional Islamic societies when and where is make-up and jewellery appropriate, and if necessary, for whom is it appropriate?

Thank you,
I will appreciate any response.

Hi, Joe.

First, I'd like to welcome you to TTI. I hope this wonderful forum we have here is of benefit to you.

This section is where new members come to Introduce themselves. There's a Lounge section where you are allowed to post anything and everything.
And then if you want to have a Islamic Discussion about certain things, there's also a section for that.
I think your thread is more appropriate for the Turn To Islam Lounge, but I don't think you should worry too much about it for now...you'll be able to find your way around soon enough.

As for your question, please read through these links,

Make up/cosmetics

Mascara and eyeliner

Fake Eyelashes

Jewelry

The more appropriate thing for a woman to do if she wants to enhance her beauty:

http://islamqa.info/en/ref/161935

http://islamqa.info/en/ref/108638

http://islamqa.info/en/ref/84903

Type of Jewelry allowed for men:

http://islamqa.info/en/ref/105400

http://islamqa.info/en/ref/139178

The bottom line is, a woman (whether she's old or young) is allowed to adorn herself with jewelry and makeup, (using the appropriate products of course), but only in front of her family.

A man is allowed to wear rings, and watches so longs as they're not made from gold.
