Spain cathedral shuns Muslim plea

Cordoba's cathedral was once a mosque
The Roman Catholic bishop of Cordoba in southern Spain has rejected an appeal from Muslims for the right to pray in the city's cathedral, a former mosque.

Juan Jose Asenjo rejected the request made by Spain's Islamic Board in a letter to the Pope.

It had asked that the cathedral become an ecumenical temple where believers from all faiths could worship.

The bishop said such a move would not contribute to the peaceful co-existence between people of different religions.

On the contrary, he said in a statement late on Wednesday, the joint use of temples and places of worship would only generate confusion amongst the faithful.

Shared use of places of worship could make sense in airports or an Olympic village, said the bishop, but not in a consecrated Catholic cathedral.

Spain's Islamic Board, which represents a community of some 800,000 in a traditional Catholic country of 44 million, argued in its plea to the Pope that such a move in Cordoba could serve to "awake the conscience" of followers of both faiths and help bury past confrontations.

"What we wanted was not to take over that holy place, but to create in it, together with you and other faiths, an ecumenical space unique in the world which would have been of great significance in bringing peace to humanity," the letter said.

World renown

The board's general secretary, Mansur Escudero, said Muslims came from around the world to see Cordoba's cathedral.

But security guards often stopped Muslim worshippers from praying inside the old mosque, he added.

The Cordoba mosque was turned into a Catholic cathedral in the 13th Century after the city was conquered by King Ferdinand III in the war to drive the Moors from the Iberian peninsula.

It is now a Unesco world heritage site.

I think this should be directed to the 'Politics etc' section.

Surely, if it is a Unesco site, then they should be the ones to give the authority, not the Bishop of Cordoba, besides the request is to the Pope, not the bishop...

Asslamo Allaikum,

I recently visited the “Mosque of Cordoba” after a number of years and saw a marked difference in how things have changed.

Years ago (& I have the pamphlets) it was called the former Mosque of Cordoba; in the new pamphlets two points are emphasised:

1) That it is a Christian church & the “Historical” site owes its restoration and continuation to the Church (no UNESCO mentioned)
2) It is mentioned that the Muslims took this site from the Christians by force hence it is now back in the hands of Christianity (sort of like the Babri Masjid fiasco in India)

The site has undergone the following changes since my last visit:

3) The old stucco of the Mosque (which has verses of the Qur’aan on it) is being replaced by new stucco which has no verses of the Qur’aan….There is hardly any old stucco left
4) Years ago there was a section in the Mosque which displayed the old stucco which has fallen out…this section now houses mostly Christian artefacts and most of the Muslim stuff (again with verses of the Qur’aan) is gone
5) The guided tour years ago used to demonstrate how the Adhan was called and the design of the Mosque allowed it to echo throughout the Mosque (this can be seen in most historic Mosques in the Islamic world)…this part of the tour is no longer done
6) I was blatantly told at entrance that if I participated in any Muslim rituals (these words used) I would be expelled versus nothing like that was said years ago

Fortunately I kept the pamphlets, materials and pictures from last visit so I can compare…

Jazakullah Khairun

P.S: I met a Saudi family and the brother said that he had come here 25 years ago in his Youth and admitted that there are many changes to wipe the Islamic identity of the site.

P.P.S: Point 2 is also mentioned on a plaque at the entrance
