Imsaak (stopping eating) a few minutes before Fajr is bid’ah
In some countries there is a time approximately ten minutes before Fajr which they say is the time of imsaak (stopping eating and drinking), when the people usually start fasting and stop eating and drinking. Is what they do correct?.

Praise be to Allaah.

What they do is not correct.

Because Allaah has permitted the fasting person to eat and drink until dawn comes. Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning):

“and eat and drink until the white thread (light) of dawn appears to you distinct from the black thread (darkness of night)”

[al-Baqarah 2:187]

al-Bukhaari (1919) and Muslim (1092) narrated from Ibn ‘Umar and ‘Aa’ishah that Bilaal used to give the adhaan at night. The Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “Eat and drink until Ibn Umm Maktoom gives the adhaan, for he does not give the adhaan until dawn comes.”

Al-Nawawi (may Allaah have mercy on him) said:

This shows that it is permissible to eat, drink, have intercourse etc until dawn comes.

Al-Haafiz ibn Hajar said in Fath al-Baari (4/199):

One of the reprehensible innovations that have appeared in our times is giving the second adhaan approximately twenty minutes before Fajr in Ramadaan, and extinguishing the lamps which indicate that it is haraam to eat and drink for those who want to fast. Those who introduced this innovation claim that they are erring on the side of caution with regard to an act of worship.

Shaykh Ibn ‘Uthaymeen was asked about some timetables which give the time of imsaak as being approximately one-quarter of an hour before Fajr. He said:

This is a kind of bid’ah (innovation) which has no basis in the Sunnah. Rather the Sunnah is to do the opposite, because Allaah says in His Holy Book (interpretation of the meaning):

“and eat and drink until the white thread (light) of dawn appears to you distinct from the black thread (darkness of night)”

[al-Baqarah 2:187]

And the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “Bilaal gives the adhaan at night, so eat and drink until you hear the adhaan of Ibn Umm Maktoom, for he does not give the adhaan until dawn comes.” This imsaak which some of the people do is an addition to that which Allaah has enjoined, so it is false. It is a kind of extremism in religion, and the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “Those who go to extremes are doomed, those who go to extremes are doomed, those who go to extremes are doomed.”

Narrated by Muslim, 2670

Thank you so much for posting this! I got a Ramadan timetable from my masjid and this piece of paper is driving me crazy. According to the time listen on the paper I should stop eating at 4:50. Fajr at the masjid is prayed at 5:30
right now it's 6:11 and it's still dark outside like it was 3 hours ago!!
This is crazy.....!!:angryred:
So If I go by the verse of the Quran technically I can still eat and drink.

I'm wondering If I can eat and drink after I pray Fajr? I really don't want to follow this irritating sheet of paper.

I'm contemplating to eat and drink 'till 5:45 a.m and pray Fajr at home.

lol assalam alaykum that made me giggle, to be honest, I believe that you can not eat after you pray fajr, through many people I have heard this but unfortunatly I don't have a resource to post, maybe someone else will. Also you can pray fajr at home and eat until the white thread of dawn is clear to you, and perhaps go break the fast in the mosque instead. Anyways praise be to Allah , assalamu alaykum wa ramatullahi wa barakato

Islam Q&A

Asak there are differences of opinion on this. Some say that we should stop eating early to be safe, i think we stop eating when the Suns angle is 15 degree and break fast when the Sun is at an 18 degree angle. BTW the website that you have listed from ( which is very good) is a salaf website, they dont follow the 4 Madhabs. Hence there might be difference in many things between their opinion and eg askimam.com.

Its a big debate on whether to follow a Madhab or just interpret from Quran and Sunnah directly.

I wouldnt jump the gun by reading one fatwa, the people in your local masjid must also be qualified. Just because some one has a website doesnt make them more knowledgeable. We should try to find out both sides or if you follow a Madbhab i.e Hanafi , shafi etc, just stick with that, i dont think you can partly this and partly that. Nowdays we tend to just follow the fatwa we like, rather than exploring everything
