Sunna adherence

Hello,

I was reading a book called The Sunna: Its obligatory and exemplary aspects. The booked stated "The only exception is formed by a small minority of people who imagine that the Quran by itself constitutes a sufficeint source for the detailed knowledge, understanding, and practice of Islam." Of course, this book is about why the Sunna is an important addition to the Quran.

So, my question is...who is the minority of people who believe the Quran 'only' is necessary. Is there a name to the group, is it a group, and is it just some people?

Note: it cannot be referring to Shia as the book later describes "the Sunna is just as central to Shi'i Islam as it is to Sunni Islam."

Thanks

Hello Abdalilah,

Thanks for the information on the Kuranistes. As for the eyebrow thing (Al-Namisat )....well, I've been plucking mine. But, I can for the moment use the excuse that I'm not Muslim. Oh, I've thought about this much since I found out about it. I just became a little overwhelmed with covering my head (which I want to do for God) and then to have wierd looking eyebrows. My eyebrows grow wierd cause I've plucked for so long. The icing on the cake may have been when, for the first time in my adult life some girl handing me a shopping cart said "here you go ma'am"! It made me happy and sad at the same time (a feeling of getting older vs. one of being respected). So, I became a little overwhelmed and shocked with all of my sudden changes that I had to slow down. I still cover my head but, not in complete hijab because I am not Muslim and even though I purchased a hijab from a store and the ladies were so nice and showed me how to put it on - again the fast changes had started to confuse me. Besides, how can I walk around looking like a Muslim if I'm not one - its just not right. Anyway, I know this is a little off subject but, I guess I needed to say it. Anyway, you mentioned the eyebrow thing. LOL! I guess you hit a cord and my guilt had to flow out! Thanks! :)

Hello,

Yes, I've only read the Quran once. I'm finishing up another book right now (Three Cups of Tea) and will start on to the Prophet's biography afterwards. I can't take Shahada if I don't know the Prophet of Islam (pbuh). And, for some reason I'm scared to take it - not be sure and then change my mind - this is not good. Don't get me wrong - I'm not worried about anything physical! I'm worried about in realms where I don't understand the workings. To take such an oath - knowing and agreeing (because of knowing) that death comes to those who leave...well, I don't want to do something that may (for a lack of better words) mess me up in the here and hereafter. Hope I explained this well.

I don't know. I'm just confused and don't want to make any mistakes. :)

I mean how can I make a decision when I don't fully understand any of the religions?

Thanks

yeah sister ladybug, read the biography of the prophet peace be upon him, a biography written by a muslim. im sure u will come to see what an amazing man he is. even michael heart (in amoungst others), who was a christian minister rated mohammad (peace be upon him) as the greatest man in history and jesus was second! many famous non-muslims speak so highly of him.

Jesus (pbuh) was third on the list, Issac Newton was second on the list.

Word of Caution

Michael J Hart has been quoted a lot by the Muslims. We need to be a bit careful about that, as we are reminded in the Quran we are not to make any distinction amongst the Prophets (pbut).

Say: "We believe in Allah, and in what has been revealed to us and what was revealed to Abraham, Isma'il, Isaac, Jacob, and the Tribes, and in (the Books) given to Moses, Jesus, and the prophets, from their Lord: We make no distinction between one and another among them, and to Allah do we bow our will (in Islam) [3;84]
