Several passengers were injured after at least three train carriages came off the tracks near Tiefencastel, a village less than 50 km (31 miles) northwest of the ski resort St. Moritz.

Pictures sent by passengers to Swiss media showed one train carriage had fallen into a ravine next to the tracks.

Swiss air rescue service Rega said it had two helicopters at the scene, where rescue efforts are complicated by mountainous terrain.

Terrifying crash leaves Swiss train hanging over ravine -
The body of a train driver has been found in the wreckage following a head-on train crash in Switzerland that left at least 35 passengers injured.

The driver was pulled from the debris after two trains collided on the same track having travelled towards each other near Granges-Marnand station in the west of the country.

Dozens of passengers were hurt, four of them seriously, in the crash.

Desperate passengers aboard the carriage swaying in the sky were forced to crawl up the carriageway in a bid to shift the weight in the wagon and prevent it from plunging over the edge.

Steven Bueller, one passenger aboard, told Swiss radio: "We all went to the back to shift the weight, to try to stop it from pitching into the ravine. It was a nightmare scene with many terrified people aboard."

The derailment occurred near the Swiss resort of St Moritz, with carriages veering off into a ravine. The ravine is in a mountainous region of south-eastern Switzerland.

Swiss police said yesterday the accident happened after the train encountered a mudslide on the tracks. At least three train carriages came off the tracks near Tiefencastel.
