Ten Tips To Fight Islamophobia

Islamophobia.jpg

In today’s world, where most of the western media “enjoys” boosting up their ratings via negative portrayals of Muslims and pumping insipid fear-mongering, every Muslim should equip themselves with proper tactics to resist against Islamophobia and possibly convert this resistance into a clement allurement that will invite mankind to Islam. Some of these tactics for young Muslims when they fight Islamophobia might be as follows:

1) Don’t rush about “teaching” the world about Islam.
First, you have make people realize that although Islamophobia is a “recent” discussion, especially of the last decade, racism is nothing new. It is one of the oldest “sin and stain” of mankind and racism is a double-edged sword that can hurt every nation sooner or later. Learn about history of racism first.

2) Civilized discussions about politics rather that “my religion is the best!” attitude
Hating is cheap and easy but learning about world history is not, people need time. When people talk about “savage Muslims of the deserts”, don’t immediately defend your “brothers”. Instead, try to shift people’s focus to “history of middle-east after 19th century.”

3) Don’t ever try to downgrade other religions or other “holy figures”.
This is not just respectful but outright “sin” according to Islamic faith. Yes, there are unfortunate individuals whom insult Prophet Muhammad(saw), but keep in the mind that you have to respect and believe in “other” prophets mention in Holy Quran.

4) With this in mind, you can base your claims on the concept of “others”.
Many keyboard vigilantes or arm-chair experts would not know about “otherization” but here is your chance to tell people that Holy Quran does not “omit” Jesus or Moses or Abraham and all the rest. Ostracism doesn’t work in Islam, use this. You know what ostracism means, right?

5) Why is it a problem now?

Ask them why hijabi-workers have become a problem now, since they have always been wearing what they are wearing. Again, you can use this claim to make Islamophobes focus on world events rather than the religion itself. There have been “Muslims” and their children and their worship places all over USA and Europe for the last century but for some reason people started to see them as “cultural” threats only recently.

6) Try to Avoid "Conspiracy Theories".
When they try to tie their Islamophobic views with the events of 9/11, take a deep breath and don’t jump into every kind of conspiracy theory you can find on the web at once but instead try to engage in “civil and emphatic” conversation.

7) Educate People with Islamic History
Today, with the enormous amount of deliberate and persistence false-information being spread about Holy Quran and Prophet Muhammad(saw), it might be even trickier to fight Islamophobia. Try to inspire people from the pages of history of Islam and try to unearth sheer amount of “philosophical and scientific richness” that flourished through out the centuries, especially in the golden age of Islam.

8) Try to make people question their “news-sources”.
Again, when you’re doing this, don’t rely on “conspiracy theories”. Rather, tell people that it won’t hurt to be a bit of skeptical. You know that western renaissance and reforms in the medieval times were fueled with “philosophical movement of skepticism”, right?

9) Research…
This is obvious but doesn’t hurt to be reminded again. Don’t rely on your “brothers and sisters” all the time. Keep in mind that for every country that is full of Islamophobes, there are also very “normal and healthy” folks in that very nation that are not happy with these “racist” mind-sets. So, form alliances with them. And of course, use reputable authentic Islamic websites such as Turn To Islam.

10) Finally, be a good Muslim.

Maybe the only and the best way to fight Islamophobia:

And the servants of (Allah) Most Gracious are those who walk on the earth in humility, and when the ignorant address them, they say, “Peace!”; (Al-Furqan 25/63)

If i may add:

1. Remember the Prophet. The Prophet was subject to horrible insults and hate crimes in his lifetime. He remained steadfast, patient and tolerant in the face of this Islamophobia. We must model this same behavior.

Good and Evil deeds are not alike. Requite evil with good, and he who is your enemy will become your dearest friend. But none will attain this save those who endure with fortitude and are greatly favored by God. (Quran 41: 34-35)
Pray that God guides these people who mock His messenger.

2. Keep sending Salam and Durood to the Prophet, which is the main way Muslim demonstrate our love for the Prophet.

3. Make protest more honorable since it is for the love of the Prophet. Perhaps a public recitation of the Quran either voiced or silent will be more powerful and worthy of the Prophet.

4. Do not engage in forms protest that are condemned in Islam. This includes burning flags or other symbols that people hold in esteem or insulting other religious groups. Unfortunately, some Iranian newspapers have commissioned the drawing of anti-Semitic cartoons in protest of the offensive Danish ones. This is a disgusting form of retaliation that deserves absolute condemnation. Not only does this contradict Islamic rules of respect for others, it will neither help fight Islamophobia, nor elicit any understanding about why Muslims are upset about the Danish cartoons.

5. Note that incidents of Islamophobia are not isolated. Whether it's depicting the Prophet as a terrorist, disrespecting the Quran, torturing prisoners, bombing civilians or occupying Muslim lands, these are all signs of Islamophobia.

6. Also note that not all media or all non-Muslims support this type of insulting behavior. Many have been at the forefront of condemning torture, bombing and occupation.

7. Equate racism, anti-Semitism and Islamophobia. They all are fruits of the same tree of hate.

8. Start using the word Islamophobia to describe any kind of hate crime or speech against Islam and Muslims. Doing this will make the term uniform and eventually, an accepted part of the English language the way the term "anti-Semitism" is.

9. If you are involved in interfaith work, bring up the topic of Islamophobia at your meetings. Stress the urgency and need for people of all faiths to help address and condemn it and all other forms of intolerance publicly. If possible, get the organization to issue a public statement condemning Islamophobia in general, as well as in response to specific incidents like those mentioned above.

10. Sponsor reports on Islamophobia. Unless more documentation and yearly opinion surveys are conducted, people will continue to dismiss Islamophobia as a reality. So far, the UK is the only country which has officially commissioned a report on Islamophobia.

11. Report any and every incident of Islamophobia you, your family or friends encounter. A government does collect hate crime statistics. Report Islamophobia to them at your police

12. If it's an election year, make sure your local MP who relies on your vote is aware of Islamophobia. Organize a delegation of Muslims in your constituency if you can and arrange to make a presentation on the topic, as well as a list of clear things you would like your MP to do about Islamophobia if they want your vote.

[1-9] By the heaven with its strong forts,1 and the promised Day,2 and the seer and that which is seen.3 Doomed were the people of the ditch, which had the fire fed by the intensely blazing fuel, when they were sitting by the ditch and witnessing what they were doing with the believers.4 And their enmity against the believers was for no other reason than that they had believed in that Allah Who is the All-Mighty the Self-Praiseworthy, Who is the Owner of the Kingdom of the heavens and the earth: and Allah is watching over everything.5
