The Cycle of Conduct
The Prophet (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) said: “Maintain your chastity and refrain from other people’s wives, your wives will remain chaste. And observe good behaviour unto your fathers, your sons will observe good behaviour unto you. And whomsoever is approached by his brother offering an apology, he should accept his apology whether he is right or wrong. If he does not do accordingly, he will not come to the Haudhe-Kauthar.” [Mustadrake Hakim]
This hadith tells us that as you do unto others, so will be done to you:
Don’t think of other people adulterously and your spouse will be loyal to you.
Behave well towards your parents and your children will be courteous and pleasant with you.
Allah (subhana wa ta’ala) says: “Whatever hardship befalls you is because of what your own hands have committed, while He overlooks many (of your faults).” [Quran: Surah Ash-Shura, Ayat 30]
Allah (subhana wa ta’ala) wishes for us to live in harmony with each other. To this end He commands us through His beloved Prophet (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam), to forgive each others faults. Thus, He tells us that if any Muslim; our son, daughter, husband, wife, aunt, uncle, neighbour, in-law, friend, cousin, co-worker, niece, nephew, stranger, mother, father, grandparent, grandchild… asks us to forgive them some fault of theirs, we should readily forgive them.
This hadith tells us not to make our forgiveness dependent on the way their apology is worded, or on whether they are right or wrong. We are to forgive them and put the matter behind us forever if we wish to see the Prophet (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) at the reservoir that Allah (subhana wa ta’ala) has granted him and drink from its refreshing water on the Day of Judgement.
If we forgive others, Allah (subhana wa ta’ala) will forgive us our sins.
