ASAM is the acronym for the American Society of Addiction Medicine.

They recently published an updated article reflecting that addictions are brain dysfunctions that can lead to immoral behaviors. Although not greatly mentioned smoking and eating a lot of chocolate are addictions.

    the publication:

what this means is people are generally labeled as bad people because of addictions. However, this study shows that it is taught behaviors that alter the reward and recognition in the brain of the person and causes it to change thus behavior adaptations are followed.

The good news is that this is an indication that it can be changed with ease. The brain just needs to be taught association concepts to alter these vices. The addiction is with the brain and not so much the chemical. For example when a person stops smoking the only chemical withdrawal of nicotine is a slight pinging of the stomach which deceives the person thinking he or she is hungry. Aspartame or in soda or even coffee has a greater chemical withdrawal affect than smoking would you believe that. All a smoker needs to do is document each time they light up how they are feeling and what initiated them (triggered) to smoke then consciously begin to identify and remove those triggers. They can quickly reprogram the triggers to do any other thing that is healthy.

You can get a better feel by reading the FAQ page on the link as it answers questions about the benefit of this study. found here it's a pdf

No as mentioned in the article sex(promiscuity) is an taught behavior and addiction. Funny thing is those who classified as that miss out on the pleasure that Allah bestowed upon us. They don't enjoy it they just end up doing it because of a pattern.

Now your concern with internet, IDK, however, you can capitalize on limiting it and perhaps engaging in physical fitness activities or even learning how to do new things and that could include computers. That is if you have clearly defined your values of what you want to accomplish.

bottom line is find the triggering mechanism and just document it in the beginning without any changes. Than make a plan of action to counter the trigger or substitute it. Like for example that time you go online instead you go out and go for a walk, etc.

    wa Allah ya'lam
