3. except such that have faith, and do righteous deeds, and join together in the mutual teaching of truth, and of patience and constancy.

this was surah 103 AL-ASR

i remember the first time when i came across this surah. i was stuck on the first verse for at least a half hour. it just seemed pretty vague to me. but then something had hit me. “by the token of time through the ages.” meant that it was talking about every possible breakdown of time. seconds, minutes, hours, days, etc. so when the next verse “ inna alinsanna lafee khusrin. “ was read, it was a clear indication of how we as human beings waste so much time on unimportant things. because of the time that we wasted, will find ourselves in loss.

what time have we wasted? we spend countless hours sitting in front of the television, but hardly give any time to read the quran or to read and learn the sunnah of our beloved prophet Muhammad ( pbuh ). we also take parts in idle talks that aren’t of benefit to us. we are often to worried about downloading the newest 50 Cent CD instead of making salat. salat and reading the quran has so much benefit, yet we waste so much time on things that aren’t important. if people only knew the benefits of making salah or reading quran, they wouldn’t be able to find anything more that they would want to do. everyday we fail to serve Allah SWT, even in the littlest ways, we indeed find loss for ourselves.

but the third verse in this surah is very inspiring to those that want to obey and serve Allah SWT. those people that have imaan are comforted in knowing that they are pleasing Allah SWT. their faith causes or inspires them to do righteous deeds. they look for opportunities to do good for people, not for their own sake or glory, but for the sake of Allah SWT. what is more beautiful than that? those with imaan strive hard to gain ilm ( knowledge ) but they also feel compelled to spread this knowledge about Allah SWT to others. what is better than teaching or sharing knowledge about the Creator to those that do not know it. or sharing more to people that want to gain more knowledge than they already have?

the verse ends with stressing patience and constancy. part of having imaan is all about being patient. many of us are striving to enter the jannah. but we are also striving to have the successes of this life as well. in both cases, patience is necessary. jannah is an uphill battle. there are roadblocks in the way that we stumble across all the time. roadblocks like doubt, losses, sins like zinaa etc. but we have to be patient and repentant to persevere. we as muslims are sacrificing the temporary pleasures of this dunya so that we may be the recipients of the eternal pleasures of the jannah.

the things that we strive for that are of the dunya require patience also. but at the same time we have to understand that are main goal isn’t really to be very successful in this dunya, but rather to be successful spiritually here in this dunya so that we may see the jannah. but there are times of hardship in this life. death, disease, old age, racism, violence etc. all of things are things that can help eat away our imaan. but if we have patience and understand the will of Allah SWT, none of these things will phase us. we will stop at nothing to enter jannah. therefore we must dedicate ourselves more to our Creator, so that we do not end up in loss and the hellfire. may Allah SWT reward us with the jannah ameen.

I want to say a bit about the value of Time, I feel I need this reminder and maybe it'll help [everyone else] too.

Take a look at Surah Asr, I read Surah Asr when I know im being swallowed up by academic work and I know I havnt been splitting my time as effectively as I should be, (often happens) These are extracts of various articles I have a read/favourited and re-read whenever I need a reminder:

وَالْعَصْرِ
إِنَّ الْإِنسَانَ لَفِي خُسْرٍ
إِلَّا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا وَعَمِلُوا الصَّالِحَاتِ وَتَوَاصَوْا بِالْحَقِّ وَتَوَاصَوْا بِالصَّبْرِ

I swear by the time,
Most surely man is in loss,
Except those who believe and do good, and enjoin on each other truth, and enjoin on each other patience.

Time is innocent, people so often wrongly accused it of all the hardships and wrongs that they experience. Time is a mere receptacle for these happenings. It is neutral. This is why the Prophet (SAW) prohibited us from censuring the course of time. He related that Allah said: “The son of Adam does me wrong when he curses the course of time. I am the course of time, for the affair is in My hands as I turn the day and night over one another.” [Sahîh al-Bukhârî (4826) and Sahîh Muslim (2246)]

In Surah Asr, Allah swears an oath by time, indicating its seriousness and importance. Time is the receptacle within which our deeds are carried out. It is a factor in our success in this world and the Hereafter. Allah says: “He it is who made the night and the day to follow each other for such as have the will to remember Him or to give thanks.” [Sûrah al-Furqân: 62]

Allah says regarding the unbelievers in Hell: “Therein they will cry: ‘Our Lord! Bring us out. We shall work righteousness, not the deeds we used to do.’ Did We not give you long enough lives so that he who would receive admonition could do so? Moreover, a warner came to you. So taste what comes to you. For the wrongdoers there is no helper.” [Sûrah Fâtir: 36-37]

Allah swears an oath by time because, in the course of time, changes and transformations take place. Summer turns to winter. Cold weather replaces heat. Strength turns to weakness. Victory turns to defeat. A person goes from rags to riches. Hardships are replaced by ease. Sicknesses are cured.

The word for time used in Surah Asr is the Arabic word “`Asr” which refers to the current time or age, as opposed to some more eternal and abstract notion of time. By swearing an oath by this aspect of time, Allah is indicating to us the importance of being up to date, of living in the present, and of understanding the contingencies of the era in which we live. We need to understand the age in which we live and actively engage the changes and challenges that it presents to us.

This is why Allah commands us to say in every unit of prayer that we perform: “Guide us to the Straight Path”. This shows us that there will always be new matters for which we will need guidance.

1-Time passes quickly.
2-Time that passes can never return, nor can it be compensated for, for time is irretrievable.
3-Time is the most precious thing that man possesses.

People often say 'time is money' but thats not the case, Money can be replaced if its lost but time cannot, this makes it more valuable than any amount of money. People also talk of 'killing time' however what they fail to realise is that time is slowly killing THEM as they waste it.
