The Islamic shahadah

Every one in order to become Muslim must testify his faith and must believe it from the heart. The Shahadah is the first pillar of Islam and one can write endless of books, articles and writings on this first pillar alone and there are actually much writings on this subject. What I find interesting and special about the first pillar is that it is called testimony or witness and this should make a person ponder about it. If one is called to testify in court, there has to be evidence or proof for the person to be accepted. Islam requires a person to testify one's faith and that is impossible without evidence or proof. Therefore, one has to have proof to testify about something in order for it to be valid. Islam is the religion of truth and proof. The Creator has given us proofs, signs and miracles all around us and it is impossible to count them all. Everyday we learn more and see more signs, evidence and miracles. So Islam has the proof and one has to be certain and aware of this proof in order to make shahadah.

Islam is simple to understand, it is logic and it has proof for it. Every person is also born with fitrah and Islam is that original nature that we are all born in. That is why one who embraces Islam is not correctly called a convert but the person is a revert since all children are alredy Muslim. The sun, moon, stars, skies, plants, animals, etc are all Muslims too because they are in submission to their Lord. With us humans we have a choice in life. We can submit to the will of Allah(Islam) which has to be done voluntarily or one can be arrogant, prejudiice, narrow minded and follow one's own desires. A Muslim is one who submitts to the will of the Creator and does not worship his creation instead. That is another reason why I can't help but laugh when I hear the repeatd lie and myth that Islam was made possible by forced conversions. It is impossible for someone to be forced into it because it requires sincereity which is one of the many words which derive from Islam. It requires submission, obedience and it leads to peace. How can one be forced into it if it has to be done in sincerity and voluntarily. Even if someone completely ignorant would try to imagine forcing someone into Islam, it would be false, it wouldn't be Islam and it wouldn't be accepted by Allah Subhana wa Ta'ala.

It becomes common sense and there is no need for a person to be forced into Islam since it has evidence. That is why one is required to make Shahadah upon embracing Islam. This is the first pillar and it is a testimony of one's faith. Islam gives evidence and only a person who is certain testify that there is no other ilaha except Allah and Muhammad is His final messenger. In Islam there is Iman(faith) and there is proof. The faith or iman is not like in other religions which is based on hope, blindness, etc but it is a confirmed faith for which there is evidence to be assured. I thought I share this and remind people how unique Islam really is.

May Allah guides all and make us on the path of the Prophet(saaws) and his companion(may Allah be pleased with them), Ameen.

Wonderful post brother.

Let me ask the question though, should we consider a Shahadah that is said, for the purpose of conversion, without witnesses as valid? I have read conflicting statements on the subject, some say that it is valid without witnesses, others say that there should be at least two witnesses.

I'm your brother
I just like to add, you may need witnesses if the law (if any) in your country requires you to declare if you want to change your religious status and requires you to submit witnesses before you can update your profile with the authorities or to change your ID cards etc. On top of that, to declare in public will help you when something happen to you so that the public know you are a muslim.

So my suggestion is better you make your shahadaa in front of a sheikh or imam of mosque and let the community know you are a muslim now, inshAllah.

I'm sorry brother if my explanation do not satify you.

Salaam Aleykom brother icadams, as far as I know, there is no need for a witness to Shadah. It can be done at any time and anywhere the truth may hit you. It happened to me at a time and place where there was no Masjid and hardly any Muslims. It would be illogical that witnesses are required because what if one is alone and there are no Muslims. Furthermore, it is between you and Allah and He is all knowing, all hearing and all seeing. Therefefore, based on my knowledge and I have done much research on it, I agree that there is no need for witness. It be nice to do it at a masjid with others there to welcome you but it wouldn't be a requirement.

Thank you brothers. It makes sense that one should not need witnesses to recite the Shahadah. It is possible that where I read that one needed witnesses was referring to countries where one may need to register a religion change. After all, it is Allah who knows what is in our hearts.
