the joy of seeing fellow muslims

in times past, in the area in which i live, finding another muslim nearby was a very rare sight. many times i would be very discouraged by not seeing my fellow brothers and sisters in islam outside of the masjid. i remember having to run or jump towards any muslim i saw because i was so overjoyed to see another muslim. i'm always overjoyed when i see another muslim. but i'm very happy that i don't have to flag muslims down anymore. alhamdulillah the muslim population in my area has grown so greatly in these past few years. everywhere i go in new jersey i'm finding more and more muslims. hospitals, law offices, supermarkets, my own workplace etc. it's a very inspiring thing to see.

long bearded muslim men aren't stared at as much as they used to be. hijab or niqabi wearing muslim women are becoming a normal sight and don't attract as much stares as time past. i'm not saying that these things never occur but things have improved. i think they have improved because many americans have taken the time out to find out what islam is all about. they have come away realizing that terrorism or the maltreatment of women isn't what islam is all about. also many brave and courageous muslims have taken the time to explain islam to the people.

we're still a long way from convincing everyone that islam means peace, but we have indeed made progress. we see it in the large numbers of hispanics embracing islam, asians, african americans, and white americans embracing islam. if this trend continues, we will be able to see a masjid in every american town insha'allah.

Theres a farmers market that I used to work at and it was outside, Alhamdulilah I'd usually see atleast a one or a couple women in hijab when I worked (saturday and sunday)

But other than that I don't see many muslims, but there are about 4 other muslims at the school I go to

I'm in south jersey maybe it's a bit different where you are

That's great news man, alhamdula! How lucky are the ones (you and those before you) who held onto Islam at a time when they were isloated.

I was at Mall of America last summer and saw oodles of women in full black abayas with men in beards. I was watching just to see how others reacted to them, and honestly, I don't think anyone paid them any mind at all.

I think it depends a lot on where in the US you are. I may be biased, but the Midwest, with it' generally conservative values, would seem to be a good place for Muslims (I am from the Midwest) -especially in the mid-sized cities.

I so agree. I was talking to my sister (she wears a hijab) who was greeted by a muslim revert in a supermarket in Colchester (outside London) and she was so taken by surprise that she was speechless. While she felt very bad for not returning the salam, she was very happy to see fellow muslims there. Atleast she is better prepared for her next encounter with a fellow muslim. :D

there are a lot of muslims in the heavily populated cities. cities like newark, jersey city, paterson, trenton, atlantic city, east orange, edison. mostly because they tend to have a high immigrant percentage. but the rest of the state didn't really have many muslims at all. but there has been such tremendous growth in the nj suburbs. it's really nice to see that.
