Eight Australians exposed to Hendra virus .

BRISBANE, Australia, June 30
-- The latest outbreak of Hendra virus has eight people waiting for test results after they were exposed to a Hendra-infected horse that died in southeast Queensland, local media reported on Thursday.

A vet is among the eight who came into contact with the infected horse that died on Sunday, according to Australian Associated Press (AAP).

Acting chief health officer Dr Aaron Groves said all involved were believed to have had a low to moderate level of exposure.

He said none were showing any active signs of the virus so far.

They are undergoing blood tests and will have a second test within 21 days and a third six weeks later to ensure they have not contracted the virus.

Biosecurity Queensland has quarantined two properties to determine the horse's movements and what other horses it had contact with.

The horse fell ill while at a property at Kerry, near Beaudesert, south of Brisbane, on Saturday and died the following day, about 30km south at Biddaddaba in southeast Queensland, after the female owner took it home. The virus was first found in September 1994 at a property in the Brisbane suburb of Hendra. Since then, four of the seven people infected with the virus have died.

BRISBANE, Australia,
-- An experimental treatment used on a mother and daughter exposed to the Hendra virus will be developed in Queensland, Health Minister Paul Lucas revealed on Wednesday.

It is hoped a monoclonal antibody can be produced to treat people exposed to sick horses and give their bodies a fighting chance against the potentially deadly virus before symptoms occur.

Researchers at the University of Queensland-based Australian Institute for Bioengineering and Nanotechnology hope it will improve the survival rate.

"It is not a vaccine, it will not prevent Hendra virus ... it's about getting a whole new army on your side to help fight with your antibodies the attack from the Hendra virus," Lucas said in announcing the government grant.

The institute's director, Professor Peter Gray, said the antibody being worked on was a refined version of a similar trial treatment for monkeys and ferrets given to a Sunshine Coast mother and daughter in May.

Gray said it would be three to six months until the antibody would be available for Queensland Health for future cases.

Queensland's chief health officer Dr Jeannette Young said the treatment would need to be given in the days after exposure, before symptoms occurred, or it would be too late.

She said prevention, such as wearing protective clothing around sick horses, was still the best way to guard against the virus.

Symptoms of Hendra virus in humans include flu-like illness, brain inflammation, high fevers, headache and drowsiness.

There have been 14 Hendra outbreaks in Australia since 1994, killing more than 40 horses. All of the human deaths have happened in Queensland.
