"The man who committed 99 Murders"

Islam is a way of life
This is an AMAZING poem, but not by me! A friend wrote it and entered it to a contest by a magazine in the UK, I'm not sure of all the details since I'm American. Anyway, may she win. Haha!

The man who committed 99 Murders

On his 99th Murder
he heard someone say
"you'll be punished tomorrow
for the crimes you did today."
So he went to a man
who was respected and good
Told him what he'd done
would he be forgiven if he could?
The man shoook his head
and quickly he said
"Hell is made for people like you
God'll punish for the people you slew"
So the man said "oh well
if my final resting cell
is that fiery pit of hell
I might kill you as well"
But he still felt blue
With the fact that he knew
He was not worthy of Allah
And the tears fell down his face
As he felt out of place
In the house for Salah
Someone heard his weeping
"What painful secrets are you keeping?
Why are those your tears that are seeping
through your clothes?"
So the man told him
of the killing of his kin
knowing this guy would give no salam
when he found the blood of hundreds on his palm
"Does God have mercy for people like me?
Will I get paradise's key?"
The old man smiled
said "Oh my child
His mercy outweighs his wrath
And to my words take heed
Stop your bad deeds
that make others bleed
move away from this land.
Make a fresh start
With those of pure heart
and from your crimes you will surely part."
So armed with hope
With burdens he could cope
he set out to reach his goal.

But the Angel of Death claimed his soul.

This caused a rift
for two angels wanted to lift
when time came for his soulshift
One for punishment for the crimes he gained
One for mercy for the sins he wanted drained
So Allah in his wisdom made a decree
Measure the distance between the sins and piety
The land his body was found to be
If he was nearer to the land of sinners
He will surely not be classed a winner.

The angels of punishment were sure they'd win
For the man had stepped and his soul was snatched from him
But Allah in his mercy made it appear so
The land his body lay was those who bow low
The ones with pure heart and offered charity
So the angels of mercy could take him with clarity.

They told him "peace, Allah has done a favour on you
He loved the effort you made, He saw your heart was true."

Assalamua'laykum wa rahmatullah,

This story is actually based on a hadeeth. I'll try to find it soon, InshaAllaah.

Wassalam.

Abu Sa' id Al-Khudri (May Allah be pleased with him) reported: Prophet of Allah (PBUH) said:

"There was a man from among a nation before you who killed ninety-nine people and then made an inquiry about the most learned person on the earth. He was directed to a monk. He came to him and told him that he had killed ninety-nine people and asked him if there was any chance for his repentance to be accepted. He replied in the negative and the man killed him also completing one hundred. He then asked about the most learned man in the earth. He was directed to a scholar. He told him that he had killed one hundred people and asked him if there was any chance for his repentance to be accepted. He replied in the affirmative and asked, 'Who stands between you and repentance? Go to such and such land; there (you will find) people devoted to prayer and worship of Allah, join them in worship, and do not come back to your land because it is an evil place.' So he went away and hardly had he covered half the distance when death overtook him; and there was a dispute between the angels of mercy and the angels of torment. The angels of mercy pleaded, 'This man has come with a repenting heart to Allah,' and the angels of punishment argued, 'He never did a virtuous deed in his life.' Then there appeared another angel in the form of a human being and the contending angels agreed to make him arbiter between them. He said, 'Measure the distance between the two lands. He will be considered belonging to the land to which he is nearer.' They measured and found him closer to the land (land of piety) where he intended to go, and so the angels of mercy collected his soul".
[Al-Bukhari and Muslim].

In another version: "He was found to be nearer to the locality of the pious by a cubit and was thus included among them". Another version says: "Allah commanded (the land which he wanted to leave) to move away and commanded the other land (his destination) to draw nearer and then He said: "Now measure the distance between them.' It was found that he was nearer to his goal by a hand's span and was thus forgiven". It is also narrated that he drew closer by a slight movement on his chest.
