Question:

What is the ruling on Islamic nasheeds that are free of music?

Answer:

Praise be to Allaah.

The clear saheeh texts indicate in a number of ways that it is permissible to recite poetry and listen to it. It was narrated in saheeh reports that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) and his noble Companions (may Allaah be pleased with them) listened to verse, recited it (as nasheed) and asked others to recite it, both when they were travelling and when they stayed at home, in their gatherings and whilst they were working, individually, as in the case of Hassaan ibn Thaabit, ‘Aamir ibn al-Akwa’ and Anjashah (may Allaah be pleased with them), and in unison, as in the hadeeth of Anas (may Allaah be pleased with him) which describes the digging of the ditch (al-khandaq). Anas said:

When the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) saw how exhausted and hungry we were, he said (in verse):

“O Allaah, there is no life except the life of the Hereafter, so forgive the Ansaar and the Muhaajireen.”

And they said in response:

“We are the ones who have pledged allegiance to Muhammad, to make jihaad for as long as we live.”

(Narrated by al-Bukhaari, 3/1043)

And in gatherings too: Ibn Abi Shaybah narrated with a hasan isnaad that Abu Salamah ibn ‘Abd al-Rahmaan said: “The Companions of the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) did not speak in devious tones or in a soft manner. They used to recite verses in their gatherings, denouncing the affairs of their jaahiliyyah, but if it was the matter of their religion, they would become very serious and cautious (8/711).

This evidence indicates that nasheeds are permissible, whether recited individually or in unison. The word nasheed in Arabic means raising the voice when reciting verse and making the voice sound beautiful and gentle.

There are conditions to which attention must be paid with regard to this matter:

Not using forbidden musical instruments in nasheed.

Not doing it too much or making it the focus of the Muslim’s mind, occupying all his time, or neglecting obligatory duties because of it.

Nasheed should not be recited by women, or include haraam or obscene speech.

They should not resemble the tunes of the people of immorality and promiscuity.

They should be free of vocal effects that produce sounds like those of musical instruments.

They should not have moving tunes which make the listener feel “high” as happens to those who listen to songs. This is the case with many of the nasheeds which appear nowadays, so that the listeners no longer pay any attention to the good meaning of the words, because they are so entranced by the tunes.

And Allaah is the Source of strength.

another thing, is that that shaytan (may Allah's curse be upon him forever) will make a person do a permissible deed of less importance than a greater deed. For example, many people are touched by the nasheeds and they can listen to them every single day and moment. When they are bored, they just pop in the cd and listen. But this makes us negligent of quran. The words of Allah, the Quraan, became nothing more than a ritual that people recite only when someone dies, a new house is bought etc.. And those who make nasheeds to make money of it and to attract the minds of muslims, should fear Allah azawajal as they are not doing nothing more but distracting us from the real importance and that is understanding, reciting and following the Quran. In the Quran, we learn the real meaning of this life, what is expected in the hereafter, it is a cure for believers and increases the believers in faith, and it shows us those who love us and those who do not love us. The prophet :saw: told us that a person gets 10 hasanah for every letter you recite. Not alif lam mim as a letter but alif is a letter lam is a letter and mim is a letter. So, by just reciting alif-lam-mim you receive 30 hassanah. While reciting nasheeds, we get no hassanah, that is why shaytan was us to do that instead of reciting the Quran. This is the month of Ramadan, and we should use our time wisely and recite as much Quran as possible. This will connect our hearts with the Quran and disconnect our hearts from anything that has no benefit.

May Allah give us the understanding of religion, joing our hearts with the Quraan, and forgive our sins in this blessed months.

Ameeeen

Why is that? :shymuslima1:

Salamu alaykum

First, since the prophet :saw: said so, so we should submit ourself to that and not ask why. The prophet :saw: is not sent to speak of his desires but to reveal that which our creator has revealed. The women are temptations for men. And their voices are also of a temptations. There is no disagreement that a woman is a temptations as Allah has created her to be that way. In one narrration, the prophet :saw: said that i have not left a greater fitnah (test, turbulation) for a man after me greater than that of a woman. And it is clear what we see around us, that the woman is a temptation. Nowdays, you can not advertise anything if there is not a woman next to it. It sells to have a pretty woman next to a product even though the product is less of the importance than a woman. Selling cars, even the coke bottle is said to be build in a a shape of a woman. Why?
But there is no problem with women reciting with each other or alone without the presence of men. The prohibition here is to recite nasheeds in presence of men that are not related to you.

I hope it is clear.

Allah knows best
