Salamo Alaikome Sisters.....

Forgive my ignorance but I am learning so much here at TTI and thought why not ask since I need to know. Ok my question concerns the sisters with long hair and performing wudu. HOW??? What about when you are supposed to pass your wet hands over the top of your head and then across the back of the neck??? My hair is always in my way. Also I have bangs in front (which I am not ready to give up) and I shouldnt wet them or they become very flat against my head.

I know this is not an important question in the grand scheme of things but it was something I wondered if any other sister might be having trouble with and what was the solution you came up with????

There is so much to learn and know about and I am so interested in learning it all but I want to do everything the right way from the beginning. Thank you for being so patient with my ignorance of how to do things. :hijabi:

Salaam,

I braid my hair so it's fairly well contained when I perform wudu. I simply wet my hands and rub them from my forehead the back of my neck and then run my hands over my neck. (under my braid) Wudu does not mean every strands must be wet to the root (that is for ghusl). I do not wet the braid as according to my studies that is unnecessary.

Intention is a big part of Islam and my intension is to be Islamically pure before praying. Hope that helps.

:salam2: i have long hair too but i twist it up and put it up so i can pass my wet hands from front to back and wipe across the nape of the neck with ease. bangs can be high maintenance, lol, but i think they should be wet and probably will go back into your hair as you move your hands from front to back of head. maybe, one day, the bangs that frame the forehead will be replaced by a hijab which will look even nicer, Insha Allah:)

:salam2: again :) it is important to note that all of your hair, including bangs should be covered for prayer, even if you may not be ready to wear hijab, so be sure your prayer scarf allows you to tuck in your hair :)

Two ways of wiping over the head in wudoo’ have been narrated:

1 – After wetting the hands in water, you place them at the front of the head and wipe the head until you reach the back of the head, then you bring them back to the front of the head.
This is proven in a number of ahaadeeth from the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him).

This way of wiping the head suits one whose hair is short and will not be messed up by bringing the hands back to the front of the head.

2 – Wiping the whole head, but in the direction of the hair only, so that the hair is not changed or messed up.

This way of wiping suits one whose hair is long – man or woman – lest the hair be messed up by bringing back the hands.

Some scholars added a third way of wiping the head and that's by only wiping part of the head on condition that the person starts from the root of the hair.

HOPE THIS HELPS

salam alikoum,
i have something to add by the way, when there is a problem removing the KHIMAR (the head scarf), you can make woudoue by passing the wet hands on it. this is still true for men who wear such things on their heads and it is not easy to remove it for wudu and wear it again.
and allah swt knows the best.

Salaam sister,

Can you provide daleel for this? I have never read this and always remove my hijab before wudu, no matter the difficulty and wrestling with pins. I was under the impression that wudu is not valid if the hands are not passed over the hair.

Wipe water over head/hair 1 times

It has been recorded that the Prophet(peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) used to wipe his head three different ways:

1.Wiping all of his head

'Abdullah ibn Zaid reported that the Prophet(peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) wiped his entire head with his hands. He started with the front of his head, then moved to the back, and then returned his hands to the front.

2.Wiping over the turban only
o

Said 'Amru ibn Umayyah, "I saw the Messenger of Allah(peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) wipe over his turban and shoes." (Related by Ahmad, al-Bukhari and Ibn Majah).
o

Bilal reported that the Prophet(peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said, "Wipe over your shoes and head covering." (Related by Ahmad.)
o

'Umar once said, "May Allah not purify the one who does not consider wiping over the turban to be purifying." Many hadith have been related on this topic by al-Bukhari, Muslim and others. Most of the scholars agree with them.

3.Wiping over the front portion of the scalp and the turban

Al-Mughirah ibn Shu'bah said that the Messenger of Allah, upon whom be peace, made ablution and wiped over the front portion of his scalp, his turban and his socks. (Related by Muslim.) There is, however, no strong hadith that he wiped over part of his head, even though al-Ma'idah: apparently implies it. It is also not sufficient just to wipe over locks of hair that proceed from the head or along the sides of the head.

If you are a female and a non-mahram male (or any non-Muslim who you believe may describe you to others) may see you (such as in a public bathroom, etc.), do not remove your hijab or niqab... keep it on and wipe over it.

"O you who believe, when you observe the Contact Prayers (Salat) you shall wash your faces, wash your arms to the elbows, wipe your heads and wash your feet to the ankles." 5:6

**********************************************************
Wiping the Head

Wipe the head with the fingers of both hands, starting from the forehead, taking them to the nape of the neck, then bring them back to the forehead. Do this one time.

Allah (SWT) said, "O you who believe! When you intend to offer prayer, wash your faces and your hands (fore-arms) up to the elbows, rub (by passing wet hands over) your heads, and (wash) your feet up to ankles…" (Al-Ma'idah 5:6)

The Prophet (SAW) wiped his head with his two hands, moving them forwards and backwards - beginning with the front of the head and (wiping) with them up to his nape then he (SAW) returned them to the place from which he began. (Sahih Al-Bukhari, Muslim, At-Tirmithee, and others)

Wiping Over the Turban

Men who wear a head piece that is difficult to remove (such as a turban) should wipe over the head covering. Do this one time.

Amr ibn Umayyah (RA) said, "I saw Rasoolullah (SAW) wipe over his turban and leather socks." (Sahih - Al-Bukhari and others)

Wiping Over the Turban and Forelock

If part of the head is uncovered and it is normally so, then it is preferable to wipe over the part that is uncovered along with the turban. Do this one time.

Shu'bah (RA) said, "The Messenger of Allah (SAW) made wudu and wiped over the front portion of his scalp, his turban and his socks. (Sahih - Muslim)

Woman's Head Cover

As for the woman's head cover, it is also permissible to wipe over it. This would be the case of a woman that has no private place for wudu (i.e. where non-Mahram men or non-Muslim women may see them). Do this one time.

Umm Salamah (RA) used to wipe over her head cover . (See'al-Mughnee' - Ibn Mundhir)

During wudu (ablution) do girls (who have long/thick hair) need to wet all the hair till the ends, or just a single stroke over the head is enough??
---------------------------------------------------------------------

ِAns:

The verse which contained the order of wiping or rubbing the heads in wudu is: [[..Wipe your heads (with water)..]] [5:6]

So:
- We weren't ordered to wipe the "hair", but we were ordered to wipe the heads. But we were ordered to wipe only the head, and this is for all people, who have thick or fair hair, having hair or not, tall or short, and so on. So, we pass our hands only on what over the head, not over all the hair if it was long.

- Wiping the head, doesn't mean washing the head, like what happens in the Ghusl (ritual bath), as in Ghusl we are obliged to reach the water with our hands to the hair's roots.

Therefore, what is legislated when performing ablution is to wipe over the head and not wash it; wiping is a soft movement and does not require making the water reach the root of every hair.

- How to wipe the head?

With your wet hand, pass it fairly on your head from the end of the forehead (i.e. from the beginning of the hair) to the back of the head, and don't reach with your hands your hair after or taller than the back of your head. (And it is better that after reaching the back of the head to return again to the place from which you began, as this is better because it was narrated by Imams Al-Bukhari and Muslim about the prophet (Salla Allaho Alayhi wa Sallam): "…he wiped over his head with his hands, he started from the front of his head and wiped backward and then wiped from the back to the front until the reached the place where he started."

But if you feared that your hair will be messed up or disarranged so it is enough to do what was said before which is to begin from the beginning of the head to the back of the head)

This was what is enough to wipe from the hair over the head, and I wish that this is the reply you wanted from the question.

Allah Knows Best.

I dont feel stupid asking the questions because everyone here makes me feel like nothing I ask is stupid.

I really appreciate the information you are giving me. This website has more reliable information than I have found anywhere else on the internet. :SMILY288:
