tomb over prophet's (pbuh) grave?

I was discussing with my family and I told that tombs are not permissible in islam. but i was asked then why prophet (saws) grave has a tomb? i did not have any explanation.

as in Islam, there should not be any building over grave, then why do we see tombs over many muslims grave? why ulama dont speak against it?

Especially righteous muslims, sahabas and even Prophet Muhammed (peace be upon him) grave?

i also heard that there was no tomb for the first 700 years over prophet's (pbuh) grave, is it true?

I dont believe theres a tomb over the prophets grave, it could be just a fence to keep away those grave worshippers.

There's been a picture of a tomb over his grave some people have been sharing by email or so, but turned out it is not his grave.

but wht about the Green Dome in the prophet's mosque?
