Abdullah ibn Busr [radi Allahu anhu] said, the Messenger of Allah صلى الله عليه و سلم said,
Tooba is for the one who finds in his book (i.e. his book of deeds) lots of seeking forgiveness and repentance.
[Reported by Imam Ahmad, Bukhari and Muslim]

Vocabulary from the Hadith

طُوبَى - Tooba has several meanings. It is from the word that means every kind of good that has an everlasting nature, and a Tooba is whatever makes you feel content without needing anything else to satisfy you. We also learn from another hadeeth that Tooba is the name of a tree in Jannah. The Prophet صلى الله عليه و سلم said, "Tooba is a tree in Paradise, as big as a hundred year's journey; the clothes of the people of Paradise comes from the outer parts of its flowers." (Silsilat al-Hadith as-Saheehah, 4/639)

وَجَدَ - he found
صَحِيفَتِهِ - In his scroll/book. Referring to the book of deeds we will receive on the Day of Judgment.

اسْتِغْفَارًا - seeking of forgiveness/repentance

Lessons from the Hadith

* Imam ibn Qayyim says on the difference between Istighfaar and Tawbah, "When [the act of] istighfaar is mentioned alone, it essentially means the same as tawbah. The two words are interchangeable, each carrying the meaning of the other, when mentioned separately." [Madarij as-Saalikeen]
* He [rahimahullah] also says, "The state of repentance is at the beginning, the middle and the end of all states of submission to the will of Allah. The servant who seeks the pleasure of Allah never abandons repentance. He remains in the state of tawbah until his death. Whatever his state of belief, the servant makes tawbah his constant companion. Thus, tawbah is at the beginning and at the end of his servitude to his Creator. His need for tawbah at the end, just as at the beginning, overrides, and supersedes all other needs. Allah says: "And turn to Allah altogether (make tawbah), O you who believe so that you may succeed," (24:31)" [Madarij as-Saalikeen]
* The act of seeking forgiveness and repenting is from the sunnah of the Prophet صلى الله عليه و سلم who would do istighfaar 70 to 100 times a day. Abu Hurayrah [radi Allahu anhu] said, " I never saw anyone say “Astighfir Allah wa atoobu ilayh (I ask Allah for forgiveness and I repent to him)” more than the Messenger of Allah صلى الله عليه و سلم . [Nasaa'i]
* The believer should keep their tongue moist with seeking forgiveness and always make immediate tawbah for their sins. Allah describes the believers,“Those who when they commit a sin or wrong themselves remember Allah right away and ask for forgiveness for their sins - and none can forgive sins but Allah - and do not persist in what (wrong) they have done, while they know.” (3:135)
* Repentance and seeking forgiveness is a means to success, in this life and the next.
