US reports fifth swine flu death

US health officials have reported the fifth swine flu death in the country, where 4,714 possible and confirmed cases of the disease have been identified.

Health officials received confirmation on Friday that the new strain of H1N1 swine flu was the cause of death in a 33-year-old Texas man who died on May 5 or 6.

According to the authorities, the man, who was a single parent with three children, had been suffering from pre-existing heart problems and was therefore not strong enough to survive any viral illness.

Officials said one of the children, who had contracted the disease his father, was doing well after receiving the required antiviral treatment.

With 506 confirmed swine flu cases and two deaths, Texas ranks first among the 47 US states currently infected with the virus.

Officials on Thursday reported the death of an Arizona woman with underlying lung disease from the H1N1 flu. The other US death was reported in Washington State earlier this month.

"The H1N1 virus is not going away," said deputy director of the CDC's influenza division Daniel Jernigan, adding that the virus is expanding throughout the US.
