Warning against ignorant storytellers.

Time is Running!!
:salam2:
Many of us like to forward stories we pick up from internet, Although people don't frequently clam them to be true and are just forwarding it for benefit of others, Many stories are in contradiction with Quran & Sunnah and at times we don't realize that. Some of us (especially those on facebook) might have come across this story already:

I hope that you can tell me whether this report – which I heard from a preacher – is sound. He got up at 4.20 a.m. to get ready to pray Fajr. He went and did wudoo’ and got dressed, and got ready to go out and go to the mosque. He was accustomed to doing that since he was a child. He was used to offering all his prayers in congregation in the mosque, even Fajr prayer. He left his house and made his way to the mosque. Whilst he was on his way, he stumbled and fell, and tore part of his garment. He went back home to change his garment and put on another one. He did not get angry or swear or curse, he just went back home and simply changed his clothes. Then he set out again for the mosque, and again he stumbled and fell, and part of this garment got ripped as well. He went back home and changed his garment. Both garments had got torn but that did not deter him from his keenness to offer the prayer in congregation in the mosque. He set out again for the mosque, and he stumbled for the third time, but suddenly he felt that he was not falling, and there was someone holding him and preventing him from falling to the ground. The man was surprised and looked around, but he did not see anyone. He stood confused for a moment, then he carried on towards the mosque. Then he heard a voice saying: “Do you know who I am?” The man said: “No.” The voice replied: “I am the one who prevented you from falling.” The man said: “Who are you?” He replied: “I am the shaytaan.” The man asked him: “If you are the Shaytaan, why did you prevent me from falling?” The Shaytaan answered: “The first time when you stumbled and went home to change your clothes, Allaah forgave you all your sins. The second time when you stumbled and went home to change your clothes. Allaah forgave your family. The third time when you stumbled, I was afraid that if you went back home and changed your clothes, Allaah would forgive all the people of your neighbourhood, so I supported you and prevented you from falling.”
What is confusing me about this story is: is it possible for the shaytaan to speak to a person and hold his hand and prevent him from falling as is described in this story?.

Praise be to Allaah.

Firstly:

There is no basis for this story in the books of Sunnah, hadeeth and history. It is contrary to Islam for several reasons:

1 – The conversation between the man and the shaytaan. It is possible for the shaytaan to whisper to a person (waswasah) when he is in his real form, but speaking to him is not possible, unless the shaytaan appears to him in human form.

2 – The shaytaan says that he supported the man when he stumbled. This is something that is unbelievable, and the shaytaan is unable to do such a thing. Allaah has made the angels protectors and guardians of man, to protect them from the harm of the jinn, because they can see us but we cannot see them. Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning):

“For him (each person), there are angels in succession, before and behind him. They guard him by the Command of Allaah”

[al-Ra’d 13:11]

In this made-up story it clearly states that the shaytaan is able to protect a person against that which may harm him, or that the shaytaan is able to prevent something that has been decreed by Allaah.

3 – The most serious thing in this story is where the shaytaan says that the first time Allaah forgave the man all his sins, then the second time he says that Allaah has forgiven his family, and he says that if he had fallen a third time, Allaah would have forgiven the people of his neighbourhood! All of this is lies against Allaah and claiming to have knowledge of the unseen. Even if a mujaahid is wounded in battle against the kuffaar it does not bring such virtues, so how can it be ascribed to the one who is going to the mosque? It is not ascribed to one who stumbled when calling people to Allaah or going to uphold ties of kinship or other acts of worship, so how can these virtues be ascribed to one who falls when he is going to the mosque?

There is nothing about falling or stumbling that brings such virtues. Many of the Sahaabah fell, stumbled or were injured at the time of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him), but there is nothing in the Sunnah which ascribes such virtues to them or even some of those virtues. Allaah does not forgive a family or the people of a neighbourhood or city because of the deeds or acts of worship of one of the righteous, let alone the fact that stumbling does not bring a person closer to Allaah and it is not an act of worship in itself. If anyone were to benefit from the actions of another, then the father of Ibraaheem (peace be upon him) would have benefited from the prophethood of his son, and the son of Nooh would have benefited from the prophethood of his father, and Abu Taalib would have benefited from the Prophethood of his nephew Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him).

Moreover, how did the shaytaan know of all that so that he could tell this man about it? Does the shaytaan have the power to prevent mercy reaching one of the slaves of Allaah upon whom He wishes to bestow it?

No. Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning):

“Whatever of mercy (i.e. of good), Allaah may grant to mankind, none can withhold it; and whatever He may withhold, none can grant it thereafter. And He is the All‑Mighty, the All‑Wise”

[Faatir 35:2]

Secondly:

Undoubtedly these false stories are things that become widespread among those who do not understand their religion properly and who do not know the Oneness of their Lord (Tawheed). They are propagated by liars and storytellers who fabricate lies against the laws of Allaah.

Allaah has issued a stern warning against these liars. Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning):

“Say (O Muhammad): (But) the things that my Lord has indeed forbidden are Al‑Fawaahish (great evil sins and every kind of unlawful sexual intercourse) whether committed openly or secretly, sins (of all kinds), unrighteous oppression, joining partners (in worship) with Allaah for which He has given no authority, and saying things about Allaah of which you have no knowledge”

[al-A’raaf 7:33]

What khateebs and preachers must do is be above being mere storytellers who tell the common folk stories that go against sharee’ah. The salaf of this ummah issued a stern warning against these storytellers, because of the bad effects that their stories have on the common folk and because they contain things that go against the laws of Allaah.

In a hadeeth that was classed as hasan by Shaykh al-Albaani in al-Silsilah al-Saheehah (1681) it was narrated that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “When the Children of Israel were doomed they started to tell stories.”

Shaykh al-Albaani (may Allaah have mercy on him) said:

It says in al-Nihaayah: “when they were doomed they started to tell stories” which means they relied on words and forsook deeds, and that was the reason for their doom, or vice versa: when they were doomed it was because they stopped doing good deeds and turned to stories.

Al-Albaani said, commenting on this:

It may be said that the reason they were doomed was that they paid too much attention to stories at the expense of fiqh and beneficial knowledge which teach the people about their religion, and motivate them to do righteous deeds. Because they did that, they were doomed. Al-Silsilah al-Saheehah (4/246).

This is the case with the storytellers; they pay too much attention to stories and myths, which they narrate to the common folk, without any understanding or knowledge, and the common man hears a lot but does not understand any ruling or gain any knowledge.

Ibn al-Jawzi said in Talbees Iblees (p. 150):

The storytellers are not condemned just for being storytellers, because Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning):

“We relate unto you (Muhammad) the best of stories”

[Yoosuf 12:3]

“So relate the stories”

[al-A’raaf 7:176]

Rather the storytellers are condemned because they tell many stories without mentioning any beneficial knowledge, and usually they mix sound and unsound material in what they narrate and rely on things that are mostly impossible.

End quote.

It was narrated that Abu Qilaabah ‘Abd-Allaah ibn Zayd said: Nothing kills knowledge but stories. A man may sit with another man for a year and not learn anything from him, and he may sit with a knowledgeable man and not get up until he has learned something.

Hilyat al-Awliya’ (2/287).

How often do these storytellers narrate from bad reports to the masses, and tell them these fables, which reach such a status among the masses that they believe everything that they hear and even give them precedence over the scholars and seekers of knowledge.

Al-Haafiz al-Iraaqi (may Allaah have mercy on him) said:

One of the problems with them is that they speak to so many people and tell them things that they are unable to comprehend, and that leads them to confusion and makes them develop misconceptions. This applies if what they tell them is sound, so how about if it is false?

Tahdheer al-Khawaas by al-Suyooti (p. 180), quoting from al-Baa’ith ‘ala al-Khalaas by al-‘Iraaqi.

Ibn al-Jawzi said:

The storyteller narrates weird reports to the masses, and tells them that even if he had even the slightest whiff of knowledge he would not have told them. So the masses leave with a lot of false notions in their minds, which they discuss amongst themselves. If a scholar denounces them, they say: we heard this, he narrated it to us. How many storytellers have misled others by means of the fabricated reports they narrate to them; how many people have turned yellow with hunger (because of what they heard encouraging asceticism); how many people left their families, homes and cities to wander like monks; how many have refrained from doing that which is permitted; how many have refrained from learning and teaching knowledge, believing that he is going against his own whims and desires; how many have made their children orphans because of their asceticism whilst still alive; how many have turned away from their wives and not given them their rights, so that she is neither single nor truly married. End quote.

Al-Mawdoo’aat (1/32)

This is why the storytellers are criticized by many of the salaf.

Maymoon ibn Mahraan (may Allaah have mercy on him) said:

The storyteller may expect punishment from Allaah, and the one who listens to him may expect mercy.

Al-Albaani (may Allaah have mercy on him) said, following hadeeth no. 4070 in al-Silsilah al-Da’eefah:

This was narrated by Ibn al-Mubaarak in his book al-Zuhd with a saheeh isnaad.

Imam Ahmad ibn Hanbal (may Allaah have mercy on him) said:

The greatest liars among the people are the storytellers. The people need truthful storytellers who will remind them of death and the punishment of the grave. It was said to him: Didn’t you attend their gatherings? He said: No.

Al-Adaab al-Shar’iyyah by Ibn Muflih al-Hanbali (2/82).

We ask Allaah to set straight the affairs of the imams and khateebs, and to guide them to that which is best for them and others.

And Allaah knows best.

:jazaak: for sharing brother.
I remember having heard this story and also having watched an animated video of this story on youtube.
It is indeed a shame that such fabricated stories and some messages are spread and forwarded on daily basis.

Wa'alaikoum assalam wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh

akhi jazaka allahu khairan for the post.

I think this is all because we muslims started to waste their time on unserious sites such as faceook and the likes of it. I mean everyone can tell a story there and in a matetr of a few seconds everybody would be talking about the story.

Even so our Ulema made more than one Fatwa against such sites like faceook. The rahimahullah even said Facebook=Fitnabook.

Assalamu'alaykum wa rahmatullahi wa barakaatuh,

I've heard of the story before too. This ayaat is enough for us to be careful from where we take our information/stories from.

"O you who have believed, if there comes to you a disobedient one with information, investigate, lest you harm a people out of ignorance and become, over what you have done, regretful." [Al-Hujraat, 49:6]

The tafsir of the ayaat:

Investigating the Reliability of the News conveyed by Wicked People

Allah the Exalted ordered investigating the news that sinners and the wicked bring, to make sure of its authenticity. Otherwise, if the sinner's word is taken for granted and a decision is based on it, regardless of whether the information is true or not, the authorities will be taking the lead of the sinners. Allah the Exalted and Most Honored forbade taking the path of the corrupted and sinners. This is why groups of the scholars of Hadith refuse to accept narrations from narrators whose reliability is unknown, for they might be from among the wicked people, in reality.

Ya Rab! Forgive me..
Asalamualaykum,

JazakAllah Khair for sharing. I have heard sooooooooo many stories that I have come to the poiint that I dont believe them even if they are true! (most of the questions I ask here are because of these "stories") As sister Aisya says - I investigate first, if after I find it to be true, I spread the message otherwise go back to the source of the story and tell him/her that it is fabricated and compell him/her to do the same.

How does one sit and write up such things and then start spreading them?? I dont understand... why and how?!

Barakallah Feek brothers & Sisters.

Here's another one & this one too isn't very uncommon:

I seen people posting on Internet(facebook) about reward of performing each salah which I have not read in Quran nor in any hadiths.
they post
'' REMINDER~♥:THOSE WHO DO NOT SAY THEIR PRAYERS OF:
-FAJR : The Glow of their face is taken away.
-ZUHR: The Blessing of their income is taken away.
-ASR : The Strength of their body is taken away.
-MAGHRIB : They are not benefited by their children.
-ISHA : The Peace of their sleep is taken away. ''
Would you please tell us whether this is correct or something invented from people.

Praise be to Allaah.

This hadeeth does not appear in any of the books of Sunnah, or any books of saheeh (sound) hadeeth or even books of da‘eef (weak) hadeeths. This indicates that it has no basis and no isnaad. Rather some people have fabricated it and spread it in chat rooms and on some websites, thinking that they can scare some people and stop them giving up prayer. They do not know that they have committed a great sin by doing this. Some scholars even stated that the one who tells a lie about the Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) deliberately is a kaafir.

Al-Ameer as-San‘aani (may Allah have mercy on him) said:

The majority are of the view that telling a lie deliberately about Allah and His Messenger (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) is a major sin, because the definition of a major sin is applicable in this case, as the Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) mentioned one who tells a lie about him deliberately, and this case comes under the category mentioned in the hadeeth of being deserving of punishment.

al-Juwayni said:

It – i.e. this major sin – constitutes kufr. This is indicated by the verse in which Allah, may He be exalted, says (interpretation of the meaning):

“So who does more wrong than he who forges a lie against Allah or denies His Ayat (proofs, evidences, verses, lessons, signs, revelations, etc.)? Surely, the Mujrimoon (criminals, sinners, disbelievers and polytheists) will never be successful!”

[Yoonus 10:17].

This verse describes telling a lie about Allah and denying His signs as being equal, and there is no doubt that denying His signs constitutes kufr. And telling a lie about the Messenger (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) is like telling a lie about Allah, may He be exalted. From this verse, in which Allah denounces this action, we understand that it is a sin and that there is no sin or wrongdoing greater than that. Al-Juawyni said: and because the one who fabricates a lie about Allah or His Messenger may do so in order to waive a well established ruling, and waiving a well established ruling constitutes kufr, because it is rejecting what the Lawgiver has ordained, which constitutes kufr. Moreover, fabricating lies about sharee‘ah (and its rulings) is inevitably indicative of a lack of respect for it. And Allah knows best.

End quote from Tawdeeh al-Afkaar, 2/88

The Standing Committee was asked about this hadeeth and others, and they responded as follows:

These hadeeths cannot be attributed to any of the books of Sunnah, and after researching the matter, we do not know of any basis for them. So what must be done is prevention of their distribution and publishing.

End quote from Fataawa al-Lajnah ad-Daa’imah (vol. 2, 3/259)

Shaykh Saalih al-Fawzaan (may Allah preserve him) was asked about this hadeeth and he said:

This has no basis as far as I know and there is a strong warning in the Qur’aan and the saheeh Sunnah concerning the one who forsakes prayer, which is sufficient. For example, the Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) said: “What stands between a person and kufr is giving up prayer” (narrated by Muslim). And the Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) said: “The covenant that stands between us and them is the prayer; whoever gives it up has becomes a kaafir.” Classed as saheeh by al-Albaani in Saheeh at-Targheeb wa’t-Tarheeb, 564.

And Allah says concerning the sinners: “ ‘What has caused you to enter Hell?’ 43. They will say: ‘We were not of those who used to offer their Salat (prayers)’” [al-Muddathhir 74:42-43]. The primary reason for which they were admitted to Hell is that they failed to offer the prayer; abandoning the prayer constitutes kufr – Allah forbid – and puts a person beyond the pale of Islam, whether he neglects it because he denies that it is obligatory, or he neglects it even though he acknowledges that it is obligatory, except in the case of one who forgets to pray or falls asleep.

With regard to the message quoted by the questioner, I do not know of any basis for it or for what is distributed in some publications, “Whoever neglects the prayer will be punished with fifteen punishments.” There is no basis for this.

End quote from Noor ‘ala ad-Darb, 20 Muharram 1427 AH (0.17-0.19 on the tape)

So it is not permissible to publish this hadeeth or to attribute it to the Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him); rather what must be done is warning people about it and explaining that it has no basis in the books of Ahl as-Sunnah.

Whoever would like to see saheeh hadeeths that warn against abandoning or neglecting the prayer should read the book Saheeh at-Targheeb wa’t-Tarheeb by Shaykh al-Albaani, 1/136-140

And Allah knows best.

finding light

Ya Rab! Forgive me..
Asalamualaykum,
Yes! Have heard this one many times...
JazakAllah Khair for sharing. Wish people would think (including me) before believing such things...

finding light

Ya Rab! Forgive me..
You have inspired me to reveal the truth. Heres another story:

There is a lot of talk in chat rooms about the story of the tashahhud. The author of the article about it calls on people to focus on their prayer and to think of the background of the story of the tashahhud. In this article it says that the dialog in the tashahhud began with the Messenger of Allah when he was travelling in the company of Jibreel on his way to Sidrat al-Muntaha, during the Mi‘raaj (his miraculous ascent to heaven). At some place, Jibreel (peace be upon him) stopped and Sayyiduna Muhammad (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) said to him: Is it here that a close friend leaves his friend? Jibreel said: Each of us has a known position, O Messenger of Allah. If you go forward you will be fine but if I go forward I will be burned. And Jibreel became like a worn-out saddle cloth out of fear of Allah. Sayyiduna Muhammad (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) went on to Sidrat al-Muntaha and drew close to it, then the Messenger of Allah (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) said: “At-tahiyyaatu Lillaahi wa’s-salawaatu wa’t-tayyibaat (All compliments, prayers and pure words are due to Allaah).” The Lord of Glory replied: “Al-salaamu ‘alayka ayyuha’n-Nabiyyu wa rahmat-Allaahi wa barakaatuhu (Peace be upon you, O Prophet, and the mercy of Allaah and His blessings).” The Messenger of Allah (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) replied: “As-salaamu ‘alayna wa ‘alaa ‘ibaad-Illaah is-saaliheen (Peace be upon us, and on the righteous slaves of Allaah).” Jibreel (peace be upon him) - or it was said: the angels who are close to Allah - said: “Ash-hadu an laa ilaaha ill-Allaah wa ash-hadu anna Muhammadan rasoo-Allah (I bear witness that there is no god but Allah and I bear witness that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah).” Do we think of this sublime dialog when we recite the tashahhud? Do we feel that the Messenger of Allah (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) remembered us there at Sidrat al-Muntaha? Was it because of his compassion that he remembered us there?
How much we love you, O Messenger of Allah. How much we wish that we could see you in our dreams, even if you are rebuking us. What matters is having the joy of seeing you. May Allah send blessings upon you, O my Beloved, O Messenger of Allah.
After this, will you recite the tashahhud as you used to recite it before? After this will you send blessings upon the Messenger of Allah in al-salaah al-Ibraaheemiyyah with the same apathy? After this, will you not send many blessings upon your beloved, Sayyiduna Muhammad? You will certainly be rewarded if you send blessings upon him, but you will not be sinning if you do not. So do you want reward?
O Allah, have mercy on the reader and the publisher of this message, and make him one of those whom You ransom from the Fire.

Praise be to Allaah.

What is mentioned in the question about there being a story of the origin of the tashahhud and that it happened during the ascent of our Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) to heaven (the Mi‘raaj) is something for which there is no basis in Islam.

The scholars of the Standing Committee were asked: Is the tashahhud that we recite in the prayer what the Messenger of Allah (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) said when he prostrated at Sidrat al-Muntaha during the Mi‘raaj?

They replied: It was narrated that Ibn Mas‘ood (may Allah be pleased with him) said: “The Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) taught me the Tashahhud, holding my hand between his hands, just as he would teach me a Soorah from the Qur’aan: ‘At-tahiyyaatu Lillaahi wa’s-salawaatu wa’t-tayyibaat, as-salaamu ‘alayka ayyuha’n-Nabiyyu wa rahmat-Allaahi wa barakaatuhu. As-salaamu ‘alayna wa ‘alaa ‘ibaad-Illaah is-saaliheen. Ash-hadu an laa ilaaha ill-Allaah wa ash-hadu anna Muhammadan ‘abduhu wa rasooluhu (All compliments, prayers and pure words are due to Allaah. Peace be upon you, O Prophet, and the mercy of Allaah and His blessings. Peace be upon us, and on the righteous slaves of Allaah. I bear witness that none has the right to be worshipped except Allaah, and I bear witness that Muhammad is His slave and Messenger).’

This was narrated by the jamaa‘ah. According to another version, the Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) said: “When one of you sits during the prayer, let him say: al-tahiyyaatu Lillahi…” … and when he came to the words, “wa ‘ala ‘ibaad-Illaah al-saaliheen”, he said: “If you do that, you will have greeted with salaam every righteous slave of Allah in heaven and on earth.” And at the end he said: “Then let him choose whatever he wants to ask for.” Agreed upon.

Ahmad narrated from Abu ‘Ubaydah, from his father ‘Abd-Allah ibn Mas‘ood that he said: The Messenger of Allah (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) taught him the tashahhud and instructed him to teach it to the people: “Al-tahiyyaatu Lillahi…” and he quoted it.

Al-Tirmidhi said:

The hadeeth of Ibn Mas‘ood is the soundest hadeeth about the tashahhud, and is to be acted upon according to most of the scholars among the Sahaabah and Taabi‘een. Abu Bakr al-Bazzaar said: It is the soundest hadeeth about the tashahhud. And he said: It was narrated via twenty-odd hadeeths. Among those who were certain about that was al-Baghawi in Sharh al-Sunnah. End quote.

Thus you will know that this format is the soundest that has been proven from the Messenger of Allah (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him).

With regard to whether the Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) recited the tashahhud when he was prostrating at Sidrat al-Muntaha on the night of the Mi‘raaj, we do not know of any basis for saying that he prostrated in that place on the night of the Mi‘raaj. End quote.

Shaykh ‘Abd al-‘Azeez ibn Baaz, Shaykh ‘Abd al-Razzaaq ‘Afeefi, Shaykh ‘Abd-Allah ibn Ghadyaan, Shaykj ‘Abd-Allah ibn Qa‘ood.

Fataawa al-Lajnah al-Daa’imah, 7/6,7

Thus it becomes clear that it is not permissible to propagate these letters and essays that are not proven, or which contain innovations (bid‘ah) in beliefs or actions; rather no one should propagate them until after checking whether they are proven and sound.

It was narrated that Hafs ibn ‘Aasim said: The Messenger of Allaah (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) said: “It is sufficient lying for a man to speak of everything that he hears.” Narrated by Muslim, 5.

And Allah knows best.
