WARNING AGAINST PROHIBITIONS

Son of Aa'ishah(R.A)
All praise is due to Allah alone; may Allah send salutations and exalt the mention of Prophet Muhammad Sallallahu 'alayhi wa sallam (p.b.u.h) after whom there are no other Prophets.

One of the most important obligations upon the Muslims, is to know the limits set by Allah , in order to stop at them and not to transgress them, because Allah says what means, "….These are the limits (set) by Allah, so approach them not…." (Al-Baqara: 187) and also, "And whosoever disobeys Allah and His Messenger and transgresses His limits, He will cast him in to the Fire, to abide therein, and he shall have a disgraceful torment." (An-Nisa': 14)

Knowing the limits set by Allah includes, knowing what Allah prohibited upon His slaves so that they would avoid it. This type of knowledge is compulsory upon each Muslims since avoiding prohibitions is compulsory; and no one can avoid something unless he has knowledge of it, which makes knowing such prohibitions an obligation. The Prophet Sallallahu 'alayhi wa sallam (p.b.u.h) said, "Avoid whatever I forbade you from doing, and perform whatever I commanded you to do as much as you possibly can" (Muslim).

A Muslim must have strong willpower, and sincere determination in order to be able to avoid what Allah prohibited, otherwise, he will commit the prohibitions because of taking these prohibitions lightly and due to his weak willpower.

A Muslim realizes that Allah only prohibited that which is evil and harmful, or the harm of which outweighs its benefit, as Allah says what means, "…he allows them as lawful At-Tayibat (i.e. all good and lawful as regards things, deeds, beliefs, persons, foods, etc.) and prohibits them as unlawful Al-khabaith (i.e. all evil and unlawful things…" (Al-A'raf: 157).

A Muslim also knows that prohibiting and legalizing anything is the right of Allah alone, therefore, no one has the right to prohibit or legalize anything based on his desire, or personal opinion, because Allah says what means, "And say not concerning that which your tongues put forth falsely; "This is lawful and this is forbidden", so as to invent lies against Allah. Verily, those who invent lies against Allah will never prosper." (An-Nahl: 116)

A Muslim recognizes that whatever the Prophet Sallallahu 'alayhi wa sallam (p.b.u.h), prohibited holds the same ruling as that which Allah prohibited, because Allah described His Prophet Sallallahu 'alayhi wa sallam saying what means, "Nor does he speak of (his own) desire." (An-Najm: 3).

In the following few pages we will identify some of the prohibitions found in the Qur'an and the Sunnah, So that they become clear for Muslims in order to avoid committing them.

1. Associating Partners with Allaah

Associating partners with Allah is absolutely the greatest prohibition, Allah says what means, "Verily Allah forgives not (the sin of) setting up partners in worship with Him, but He forgives whom He pleases sins other than that, and whoever sets up partners in worship with worship with Allah has indeed strayed far away." (An- Nisa':116) and also, "…Verily, whosoever sets up partners in worship with Allah then Allah has forbidden paradise for him, and the fire will be his abode…" (Al-Ma'idah:72). There are many examples of this, like, grave worshipping, invocating other than Allah from the dead, deeming that which is lawful as unlawful and visa versa, or believing that other than Allah can affect the universe and the movement of galaxies.

2. Killing

Allah says what means, "And whoever kills a believer intentionally, his recompense is Hell to abide therein, and the wrath and the curse of Allah are upon him, and a great punishment is prepared for him."(An-Nisa': 93). The Prophet Sallallahu 'alayhi wa sallam (p.b.u.h) mentioned
killing when he warned against the major great sins saying, "Associating with Allah, undutifulness to parents, killing (without due right)" (Bukhari & Muslim)

3. Consuming intoxicants

Allah says what means, "O you who believe! Intoxicants (all kinds of alcoholic drinks), gambling, Al-Ansab and Al-Azlam (arrows for seeking luck or decision) are an abomination of shaitan's handiwork. So avoid (strictly all) that (abomination) in order that you may be successful." (Al-Ma'idah: 90). Anything which makes a person drunk, intoxicated, or lose concentration is prohibited. All types of drugs including cigarettes whether they are used by eating, drinking, sniffing, by taking injections or any other way, are all prohibited.

4. Adultery and fornication

Allah says what means, "And come not near to the unlawful sexual intercourse. Verily, it is a Fahishah (i.e. anything that transgresses its limits (a great sin), and an evil way (that leads one to hell unless Allah forgives him." (Al-Isra': 32). The Prophet Sallallahu 'alayhi wa sallam said, "One who commits adultery or fornication, does not do it while in the state of belief" (Muslim). Adultery and fornication lead to corruption within communities and mixes (or corrupts) lineage; it also destroys bashfulness in men and women, and weakens the body and causes different sexual diseases and psychological problems, and the worse harm it causes is the wrath of the Lord.

5. Sodomy & Lesbianism

Allah says what means, "… come not near to Al- Fawahish (shameful sins, illegal sexual intercourse, etc.) whether openly or secretly…" (Al-An ' am: 151). The Prophet Sallallahu 'alayhi wa sallam (p.b.u.h.) said, " If you find anyone doing the act of the people of (Prophet) Loot (sodomy) then kill the one who does it and the one to whom it is done" (Ahmad).

The nature of some people has reversed (or deviated), to the extent that homosexuals have people calling to preserve their rights, until they became heard in parliaments in Europe, and some churches even allow same-sex marriages and bless them.

6. Gambling

Gambling clubs have become wide-spread in many countries, besides the fact that there are special sites on the internet for gambling. More often than not these clubs are connected to prostitution houses, and these places combine many prohibitions and destructive sins.

7. Theft

Allah says what means, "Cut off (from the wrist joint) the (right) hand of the thief, male or female, as a recompense for that which they committed, a punishment by way of example from Allah. And Allah is All-Powerful, All-Wise." (Al-Ma'idah: 3. Theft is one of the major and great sins which disturbs security within communities and spreads disorder and fear. Many lives have been ruined and crimes committed, and the reason behind them was theft. Hence, the punishment of theft in Islam is harsh, in order for people to feel safe regarding their wealth, lives and homes.

8. Dealing with Riba (usury and interest)

Allah says what means, "O you who believe! Be afraid of Allah and give up what remains (due to you) from Riba (usury) (from now onward), if you are (really) believers. And if you do not do it, then take a notice of war from Allah and His messenger…." (Al-Baqarah: 278-279). The Prophet Sallallahu 'alayhi wa sallam (p.b.u.h.) cursed the one who consumes money acquired as a result of Riba, the one who pays it and those who witness the transaction, and he said, "They are all equal (in the sin and punishment)" (Muslim).

9. Bribery

Allah says what means, "…Help you one another in Al-Birra and At-Taqwa (virtue, righteousness and piety); but do not help one another in sin and transgression. And fear Allah…" (Al-Ma 'idah: 2). Bribery is one of the ways of cooperating in evil and transgression.

The Prophet Sallallahu 'alayhi wa sallam (p.b.u.h) said, "May Allah curse the one who bribes and the one who takes bribes" (Ahmad & Abu Dawood). Any officer, judge or person in charge who is not willing to fulfill his job unless he is bribed is included in the curse that deprives the person of the mercy of Allah.

10. Cheating

The Prophet Sallallahu 'alayhi wa sallam(p.b.u.h.) said, "He who cheats is not from us" (Muslim). Cheating tends to be practiced by business men and during trade but transactions should be truthful and clarify all defects in the items sold and should not conceal such defects as a way of cheating others in order to gain more profit, because this is not the character of a Muslim.

11. Being alone with woman

The Prophet Sallallahu 'alayhi wa sallam (p.b.u.h.) said, "Whenever a man is alone with a woman, Satan is third in their company" (Thirmithi)

The Prophet Sallallahu 'alayhi wa sallam (p.b.u.h.) said, "May Allah curse the one who has intercourse with his wife from the buttock" (Ahmad & Abu Dawood)

13. Sexual relations during menstruation

Allah says what means, "They ask you concerning menstruation. Say: that it is an Adha (a harmful thing for a husband to have sexual intercourse with his wife while she is having her menses) therefore keep away from women during menses and go not unto them till they have purified (from menses and taken a bath)…" (Al-Baqarah: 222).

14. Not being dutiful to parents and severing ties of kinship

Allah says what means, "Would you then, if you were given the authority, do mischief in the land, and sever your ties of kinship? Such are they whom Allah has cursed, so that He has made them deaf and blinded their sight." (Muhammad: 22-23). The Prophet Sallallahu 'alayhi wa sallam (p.b.u.h) said, "Should I tell you about the greatest of the major sins, it is Associating with Allah, undutifulness to parents and false testimony" (Bukhari & Muslim). Prophet Sallallahu 'alayhi wa sallam (p.b.u.h.) also said, "One who severs ties with kinship will not enter Paradise" (Bukhari & Muslim).

15. Unjustly eating up orphan's property

Allah says what means, "Verily those who unjustly eat up the property of orphans, they eat up only a fire into their bellies, and they will be burnt in the blazing fire!" (An-Nisa':10).

16. Suicide

Allah says what means, "…And do not kill yourselves (nor kill one another). Surely, Allah is Most Merciful to you. And whoever commits that through aggression and injustice, we shall cast him into the fire and that is easy for Allah. "(An-Nisa':29-30).

17. Lying

Allah says what means, "…then we pray and invoke (sincerely) the curse of Allah upon those who lie." (Aala'Imran: 61). The Prophet Sallallahu 'alayhi wa sallam said, "Lying leads to wickedness, and wickedness leads to Hell" (Bukhari & Muslim).

18. Oppression

Allah says what means, "…Verily, the dhalimun (wrongdoers), polytheists and disbelievers in the Oneness of Allah will not be successful" (Al-Qasa: 37) and also, " The Day when their excuses will be of no profit to dhalimun (polytheists, wrong-doers and disbelievers in the Oneness of Allah.." Allah says what means, " Say (O Muhammad) "I find not in that which has been inspired to me anything forbidden to be eaten by one who wishes to eat it, unless it be maytatah (a dead animal) or blood poured forth (by slaughtering or the like), or the flesh of swine (pork, etc.)…"
(Al-An' am: 145).

25. Betrayal and Spitefulness

The Prophet Sallallahu 'alayhi wa sallam said, "Anyone who has the following four characteristics is a pure hypocrite, and if has any one of them then he has a characteristic of hypocrisy until he gives it up, he betrays when he is entrusted, he lies when he talks, he deceives when he pledges and he is licentious when he gets into disputes" (Bukhari & Muslim).

26. Backbiting and Tale bearing (carrying)

Allah says what means, "O you who believe! Avoid much suspicion, indeed some suspicions are sins. And spy not, neither backbite one another. Would one of you like to eat the flesh of his dead brother? You would hate it (so hate backbiting). And fear Allah. Verily Allah is the One Who accepts repentance, Most merciful." (Al-Hujurat: 12) and also, "A slanderer, going about with calumnies." (Al-Qalam: 11). Backbiting is mentioning your fellow Muslim in his absence with that which he hates, and tale bearing (carrying) is conveying people's criticism about each other. The Prophet Sallallahu 'alayhi wa sallam said, "Tale bearers will never enter Paradise" (Muslim).

27. Abandoning Salah
