What my colleague informed me of...

Salam to you all brothers and sisters,

I hope you are all well. I would like to pose a quesion that surfaced in my mind today.
I was at work one day and my non-Muslim (and a lovely woman!) was talking to me about how religious she was as a Chistian. We exchanged a conversation about both of our religions and I was telling her the everyday obligatory actions a Muslim must take, while she told me what a Christian does. It was all very interesting. She said to me that Christians really should drink a sip of wine every day, as it "represents the blood of Jesus Christ." I asked her whether they were actually able to drink that everyday for health reasons and she informed me that you could get non-alcoholic wine. (Or you could even drink simply blackcurrant juice, like Ribena!)

Now, I am obviously aware that Muslims are not allowed wine, but as far as my knowledge goes, we aren't allowed wine because it contains alcohol and gets us drunk. BUT, I couldn't help thinking, would we be allowed to drink this non-alcoholic wine? Because if it contains no alcohol, it can't get us drunk...

I hope to read some feedback on this. Thank you.

Salam

Personally, I think we should not drink non-alcoholic wines or beers. By drinking them, we only open a door for a shaytan to come in, later one might like to try real wine.... "just a sip..... maybe two.....hmm, I don't think I'll get drunk from a glass of wine...... What the hell, I don't want to waste the rest of the bottle." :astag:

Non-Alcoholic Beer: Prohibited?

Question
Is non-alcoholic beer halal? Can Muslims consume it?

Answer

In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.

All praise and thanks are due to Allah, and peace and blessings be upon His Messenger.

Thanks for your question, and we implore Allah to guide us all to the best way through which we can learn more about what is lawful in order to follow it and what is prohibited in order to refrain from approaching it.

Indeed, Muslims need to understand the process of making so-called non-alcoholic beers or wines. The process to make alcoholic and non-alcoholic beers and wines is the same. Both alcoholic and non-alcoholic beers and wines are haram. Once the beer or the wine is produced, alcohol is extracted from it to make it non-alcoholic. Never is 100 percent of the alcohol removed. The Islamic principle is that if the whole of a thing is haram, the part of it is also haram. By that principle non-alcoholic beers and wines are haram.

Responding to the question, the Islamic Religious Council of Singapore, states the following:

Thank you for your query.

Our position is that non-alcoholic beer is not halal. Our position is based on the premise that

1. It is drunk as an alternative to something which is haram, that is, alcoholic beer.

2. The culture of wine and beer drinking which the drink entails is non-Islamic and, therefore, haram.

Therefore, based on the principle of blocking the doors to transgression in Islamic jurisprudence, non-alcoholic beer is haram.

this question was about non-alcoholic beer, but I'd think it also applies to non-alcoholic wines.

Non-alcoholic beer is haram, because although it is claimed that it is alcohol free, it does have some alcohol in it. We had checked with beer manufacturer and confirmed that non-alcoholic beer do have a minimum amount of alcohol in them because during the manufacturing process, small amount of alcohol is unavoidable. Also, we checked the matter on the legal matter and found that the U.S. law for example, (and probably European law too), allows beer manufacturers to claim that it is alcohol free if it contains less than one percent alcohol. We wish all Muslims were aware of this fact and if they are not then we should make this known through the proper educational and media channels. Thank you for asking and God knows best
