(1)Quran-2:256: “There is no Compulsion in religion….”

Or,

Quran-9:29: “Fight those who do not profess the true faith (Islam) till they pay the polltax (jiziya) with the hand of humility.”

(2) Quran-73:10 "Be patient with what they say, and part from them courteously”

or,

Quran-2:216, Fighting is prescribed for you, and ye dislike it. But it is
possible that ye dislike a thing which is good for you

(3) Quran-20:103 “Therefore be patient with what they say, and celebrate (constantly) the praises of thy Lord,”

or,

Quran- 8: 65 “ O Prophet! rouse the Believers to the fight. If there are twenty amongst you, patient and persevering, they will vanquish two hundred: if a hundred, they will vanquish a thousand of the Unbelievers: for these are a people without understanding.”

(4) Quran-109:6 "To you be your religion, and to me my religion"

or

Quran- 3:85"Whoso desires another religion than Islam, it shall not be accepted of him; in the next world he shall be among the losers."

Now one must wonders what are the correct messages that Quran is advocating to it’s followers? How many different faces Quran possesses?

Simple. If you read those verses in context, you'll see that Allah commands us Muslims to never fight because of religion. HOWEVER, if someone DOES fight us because of our religion or some other invalid reason, we are commanded to fight back.

Jihad in Islam

Jihad does not mean "holy war". (Thats something the Christians did in the Middle Ages). The Word Jihad actually stems from Juhd, to strive/struggle. This is encouraged and can be for anything to please God. It is a jihad to get up in the morning to go to pray and to go to work, it is a jihad to go school in the rain. etc.

Personal Jihad: The most excellent jihad is that of the soul. This jihad, called the Jihadun-Nafs, is the intimate struggle to purify the soul of satanic influence--both subtle and overt. It is the struggle to cleanse one's spirit of sin. This is the most important level of jihad.

Verbal Jihad: On another occasion, the Prophet said, "The most excellent jihad is the speaking of truth in the face of a tyrant." He encouraged raising one's voice in the name of Allah on behalf of justice.

Physical Jihad: This is combat waged in defense of Muslims against oppression and transgression by the enemies of Allah, Islam and Muslims. We are commanded by Allah to lead peaceful lives and not transgress against anyone, but also to defend ourselves against oppression by "fighting against those who fight against us." This "jihad with the hand" is the aspect of jihad that has been so profoundly misunderstood in today's world.

In the Quran, Jihad is not used in a sense to mean fighting. The Word Qitaal is used when mentioning warfare. The Quran makes it clear:

"Fight in the cause of Allah those who fight you, but do not do aggression, for Allah loves not the aggressors. Fight in the way of Allah against those who fight against you, but begin not hostilities. Lo! Allah loveth not aggressors. And slay them wherever ye find them, and drive them out of the places whence they drove you out, for persecution is worse than slaughter. And fight not with them at the Inviolable Place of Worship until they first attack you there, but if they attack you (there) then slay them. Such is the reward of disbelievers. But if they desist, then lo! Allah is Forgiving, Merciful. And fight them until persecution is no more, and religion is for Allah. But if they desist, then let there be no hostility except against wrongdoers." (Al-Baqarah 190-194)

Jihad can be defensive. Such as protecting our homes, people, land and way of life. It can be Liberating, helping free others from tyranny and oppression and it can be preemptive which is launched only when Muslims know for sure that there is treason against their peaceful treaties with the enemy, when the enemy has a serious plan to attack them.

This verse Quran-9:29: “Fight those who do not profess the true faith (Islam) till they pay the polltax (jiziya) with the hand of humility.”

this verse has nothng to do with peace or defence fight-- it clearly says fight until non-mus are humiliated

Question:

Islamic history tells that prophet Muhammed tried to attack the Roman Empire in what was called Tabouk convoy. He said that the reason was that they were trying to invade Muslims.

When prophet Muhammed arrived near the Romans and found out their strength, he returned back and told his companions that the Romans CHANGED THEIR MINDS and they no more trying to invade Muslims!

This incident raised few questions that I am trying to find some answers for them:

1- How did prophet Muhammed know that the Romans were preparing to invade Muslims (the well-documented Roman history does not tell anything about any preparation for such invasion)?

2- If the Romans were really trying to invade Muslims, why did they change their minds?

3- If the Romans were not preparing to invade Muslims, does not that mean that propeht Muhammad's war was purely OFFENSIVE?

Answer:
The Battle of Tabouk (also called the Battle of Tabuk) took place in October AD 630. According to Islamic sources the followers of Muhammad were heavily outnumbered by the army of the Byzantine Empire. Tabouk is in present-day northwestern Saudi Arabia.

The battle of Tabouk took place in the 9th year of the Muslim calendar. According to the Ar-raheeq Al-makhtum, an Arabic historiographical work, Heraclius, then Emperor of the Byzantine empire, had decided that reducing the growing Muslim power had become an urgent necessity and the conquest of Arabia should, in his opinion, be achieved before the Muslims became too powerful to conquer and raise troubles and unrest in the adjacent Arab territories. According to the Muslim accounts, the Byzantine Emperor mustered a huge army of Byzantine soldiers and pro-Roman Ghassanid tribes to launch a decisive military attack against the Muslims.

Allah (SWT) was talking about fighting the Pagans and those whom attack/kill innocent people because they're Muslim or other invalid reasons.

(2) Quran-73:10 "Be patient with what they say, and part from them courteously”

8:65 in no way says to fight for no reason. It simply states that Muhammad :)saw:) is to get the Muslims prepared to fight, and states that Allah will help them when the odds are apalling.

(4) Quran-109:6 "To you be your religion, and to me my religion"

or

Quran- 3:85"Whoso desires another religion than Islam, it shall not be accepted of him; in the next world he shall be among the losers."

Surah 109 (your first quote from the Qur'an) is what we are commanded to say when we have tried and tried again to preach the message of Islam, only to get it rejected. HOWEVER, that person's religion (if he/she has one) will not be accepted, and it is his fault if he/she rejected Islam.

Do you know Muslim history? The Pagans continously attacked/robbed/etc. the Muslims. Allah commands us to fight in self-defense, and WE aren't to start fights because of religion, but when we are defending it it's fine. All the Muslims were doing was defending themselves from the Pagans, and that's what Allah commanded.

Remember that Muhammad :)saw:) was a Prophet. Remember that he also had Allah on His side (and Allah probably changed the minds of the Romans). They were probably preparing to invade the Muslims, but Allah changed their minds.

OR

Wikipedia states that there were rumors from people traveling from Syria to Medinah about this attack, so Muhammad :)saw:) went up there and saw that they weren't going to attack and came back. This is looking at it from a secular view.

can you show one incident in muhammad life where pagans attacked him first? tell me about the wives of muhammad- they are the wives of husbands whom muhammad attacked and killed? so where does the question of muslims being attacked first came when this verse was said?

YUSUFALI: But if they cease, Allah is Oft-forgiving, Most Merciful.
PICKTHAL: But if they desist, then lo! Allah is Forgiving, Merciful.

Quran-2:216, Fighting is prescribed for you, and ye dislike it. But it is

Let's take the next two verses into consideration (Translated by Yusuf Ali):

2:217) They ask thee concerning fighting in the prohibited month, say: "Fighting therein is a grave (offence); But graver is it in the sight in Allah to prevent access to the path of Allah, to deny Him, to prevent access to the Sacred Mosque, and drive out its members. Tumult and oppresion are worse than slaughter. Nor will they cease fighting you until they turn you back from your faith if they can. And if any of you turn back from their faith and die in unbelief, their works will bear no fruit in this life and in the Hereafter; They will be companions of the Fire and will abide therein. 218) Those who believed and those who suffered exil and fought (and strove and struggled) in the path of Allah - they have the hope of the Mercy of Allah: And Allah is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful.

The offences are listed as people who block anyone from finding Allah and who oppresses those who seek Allah. See verse 218... it specifically mentions fighting for the sake of Allah... this does not mean that you fight and say that Allah has willed it but you only fight if someone is trying to physically force you to stay away from Allah.

See also 2:190) Fight in the cause of Allah those who fight you, but do not transgress limits; For Allah loveth not transgressors.

And 2:193) And fight them on until there is no more tumult or oppression and there prevail justice and faith in Allah; But if they cease, let there be no hostility except to those who practise oppression.

Unfortunately I can't find a verse right away that says that if you can forgive, then that is much better than fighting... hopefully someone else can find a verse like that to supplement this.

The point is that Muslims are NOT commanded to fight just for fighting's sake. Only if you are harmed or feel you will be harmed is it deemed necessary, but there are many rules applied to this to avoid actions such as the terrorists that are "fighting in the name of Allah" but I question if they really have a strong idea of who Allah really is and what they should be standing for if they do so in the name of Allah.

Surah 2 (Al Baqarah) does have the majority of the verses that relate to Jihad, war and the like so if you are confused about what halal and what isn't, this is a good place to start.

The Qur'an should be understood as a complete document and not have pieces of it taken out unless it can be explained fully by the whole Qur'an to get the full understanding.

The Battle of Badr: 10,000 Pagans against 300 Muslims minding their own business (the Muslims moved away from Mecca because of the Pagan's constant abuse).

The Wives of Muhammad (may Allah be pleased with them) were of these things: Widows of men (whom Muhammad did not kill, since in the Qur'an it is forbidden to take Pagan wives), daughters of powerful Arabian leaders (thus spreading Islam peacefully and granting Muslims peace), his love + widow (Khadijah especially).

Reading the next verse (2:217), you'll know when fighting is perscribed.

Lol, that's not the next verse. I said 2:217 (Translation of the Meaning):

"They ask thee concerning fighting in the Prohibited Month. Say: "Fighting therein is a grave (offence); but graver is it in the sight of Allah to prevent access to the path of Allah, to deny Him, to prevent access to the Sacred Mosque, and drive out its members." Once again, do you know Muslim history? The Battle of Badr (10,000 Pagans against 300 Muslims). The Pagans constantly attacked the Muslims, and Muhammad :)saw:) constantly defended from them AND attacked them back to neutralize the threat. Plus, you don't attack your enemy after warning them that you're going to attack.

Those 900 Jews attacked Muhammad first, and Muhammad ended up winning the battle. What you have said is just like saying this:

"In wars, the attacker should always warn his enemies before attacking them"

and

"In wars, when the defender wins, he should never kill his enemies: even when there is a major threat that they'll attack again".

Did you read the rest of that verse?? "But if they repent, and establish regular prayers and practise regular charity, then open the way for them: For Allah is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful"

We could play words games for days on end, but the idea is you can't take a few words out of a book full of content and say that they mean one thing when the entire book says something else.
