Salam,
I had to look this up because I had no idea either. I found that it is someone who has memorized the Qur'an. Please anyone, if I am wrong, correct me!

I had to ask the same question.
in Arabic we say " hafid or hafiz al Qur'an " is the one who memorize the Quran.
but saying only Hafiz , I really dont know what does this mean. I think our pakistani and afghan brother and sisters say it alot.

In Bosnia we also say hafiz for someone who memorize holy Qur'an

And may Allah bless each and any person who memorize it insha'Allah, may all of them benefit from it and insha'Allah may Qur'an be witness in favor to them and not against them in day og Judgement ! Ameen !

Al-Hafidh literally means The Guarding One. The Preserver, The Protector.
In general it is used for those who learn Quran by heart and specifically for those who have learnt a specific number of hadiths ( I forgot the numeber) maybe some knowledgable bro/sis can tell, inshaAllah.

Quran has one miracle and that is if a person even can not read a single word of his own language even then he can be a Hafiz. Beacuse this quran is given to us by a person who is called "Ummi" our beloved prophet Muhammad(SAW).
So this quran can be memorized at the age of 200 and none of us is 200 so hurry brothers and sisters before you reach 200.
