Who is the Mahdi?

Hello, I am new to forums as a whole and have just joined this site.
I am posting my first thread to ask:
Who is the Mahdi?
What will he look like?
What is his relevence on judgement day?
What will he do?
How can we tell it will be him?
What if I know of someone who appears to suit the description of him?

I think this is enough. I just wanted to know as much as I can on the Mahdi, for I get this feeling that he will come soon, within the next few years type of soon.

I Hope Not

I hope he won't come all too soon. After his coming, the false messiah is not too far off, and the false messiah is the MOST DANGEROUS test that the son of Adam will face since human history. And I'm not saying that figuratively, there is a hadith that proves it:

Hadhrat Imraan bin Husain (R.A.) relates that, "I heard Rasulullah (Salallahu Alayhi Wasallam) saying: "Since the birth of Adam (A.S.) till the advent of Qiyamah there is no fitnah (evil, test) much greater that of Dajjal."

Dont worry about that, if he was here we would know. Its not just physical characteristics, he will be of the family of the Prophet and have lineage.

Umm Salamah said: "I heard the Messenger of Allaah (Peace & Blessings of Allaah be upon Him) say: ‘The Mahdi is of my lineage and family, from the descendants of Faatimah.’" (Sunan Abu Dawud, 11/373; Sunan Ibn Maajah. 2/1368. Al-Albaani said that it is saheeh in Saheeh al-Jaami, 6734)

His name will also be Muhammad.

‘Abdullaah ibn Mas’ood reported that the Prophet (Peace & Blessings of Allaah be upon Him) said: "The world will not come to an end until the Arabs are ruled by a man from my family whose name will be the same as mine." (Musnad Ahmad, 5/199, hadeeth 3573. Another version says: "… whose name is the same as mine and whose father’s name is the same as my father’s." Sunan Abi Dawud, 11/370).

Al-Haafiz Abu’l-Hasan al-Aabiri said: "The mutawaatir reports from the Prophet (Peace & Blessings of Allaah be upon Him) describing the Mahdi are very many. They state that the Mahdi will be of his family, that he will rule for seven years, that he will fill the earth with justice, that ‘Eesaa ibn Maryam will emerge and help him to kill the Dajjaal, and that he will lead this ummah in prayer and ‘Eesaa will pray behind him."

When researching such things you must be careful. Not all websites on Internet are accurate. Some, like those owned by the Rafidah Shia are full of lies and fabricated stories. Rather, we take from the authentic hadith of the Prophet and his description of him.
