It is narrated from Abdullah ibn Amr [RA] that Prophet [SAWS] said,
"Convey (to the people) from me, even if it is an ayah. And narrate to others the stories of Bani Israel for it is not sinful to do so. And whoever tells a lie against me intentionally, let him occupy his seat in hellfire."
[Reported by Imam Bukhari]
Vocabulary from the Hadith
بَلِّغُوا (ballighu) - you (all) convey, get the message across. Note: this is in the command form of the verb.
آيَةً (ayah) - a sign, something wondrous (among other meanings). In this context, it refers to the verses of the Qur'an and the ahadith of the Prophet [SAWS].
Lessons from the Hadith
- Conveying the message of Islam is a command from the Prophet [SAWS] and something that we should not take lightly. And the statement, "even if it is an ayah" emphasizes that a lot of knowledge is not a prerequisite to conveying the message of Islam.
- "And narrate to others the stories of Bani Israel for it is not sinful to do so". The scholars explain that we should only narrate the stories from Bani Israel that we know are factual.
- "And whoever tells a lie against me intentionally, let him occupy his seat in hellfire." Lying intentionally against the Prophet is one of the major sins. Thus, to err on the side of caution, we must be fairly certain about wordings/references of ahadith before associating them to the Prophet [SAWS].
