Shortly after recognising Israel in a record 11 minutes once the new state was declared in 1948, the American President, Harry Truman, was asked why he had decided to do so at a subsequent press conference.
The question was Arabs surrounded the new Jewish nation and in numbers at no less than a hundred million at the time formed the majority in the Middle East and so did he not consider their interests and representation. Harry Truman replied-
