Why does Islam permit polygamy?

As some of you will already have seen, I am still learning about Islam.
So don't blame me if I have asked a wrong question, but this is something that has been on my mind for a while.

I can't imagine to get married and then see my man mary another woman.
Are we woman allowed to say no to it ?
And why is it allowed by Allah SWT ?

Hopefully it's not a stupid question. I'm sorry if it is.
