I'm very down-hearted. I can never seem to do anything right. When I need Allah's help in things, I make promises. Why can't I ever keep them? Why do I have absoluently no will-power? WHAT IS WRONG WITH ME!

This is your jihad. Even if at times when you want to give in, you cant and thats when you have to be strong and not let shaytan take control over you. This is very common amongst all of us, so dont be downhearted but that doesnt not mean that its ok.
May Allah help us all.

This is sense of self observation is a positive thing ... the one with a dead heart would see himself perfect ... NOW this is the one who really needs to worry but never does.

Be encouraged .. be positive .. continue to do the right thing and keep your heart attached to Allah (glorified He may be) with hope and fear at the same time.

I'm sure someone else will find an article that is far more eloquent than what I said.

Salam o alikom sister;

To make promise to allah if you get something or to make promise to pinish your soul if you do something wrong like: you promise yourself to fast 5 days if you start backbiting people. This is a away to educate your soul. In arabic It s name is An-nodor النذر.

Different types of vows (nadhr) and the rulings concerning them

Question:

Assalam-o-alaikum,

what is the ruling of shariah on nazr wa niaz.

Answer:

Here are some exemple:

He made a promise to Allaah to give up sin several times but he went back to it

Question:

I made a promise to Allaah that I would not commit a certain sin, but every time I broke my promise to Allaah and committed that sin. But I soon regret what I have done and repent to Allaah, and I pray the two rak’ahs of repentance prayer, repenting separately for each occurrence of sin), and I renew my promise to Allaah not to commit that sin after I finish the prayer of repentance. But because my faith is weak, as days go by I commit that sin again, then I repent again and renew my promise to Allaah again and again, only He knows how many times.
My question is:
What do I have to do as a result of my failing to keep my promise every time, after Allaah has blessed me and enabled me to keep away from those evil actions and I have repented to Allaah sincerely?.

The condition he put in his vow came to pass, but it was not exactly what he had in mind

Question:

A person vowed that if his work contract was renewed, he would give a certain amount in charity. In his mind he meant that this was if it was renewed for a year, but it turned out that his contract was renewed for three months. He did not utter the words “one year”. Is he under any obligation?

Answer:

Praise be to Allaah.

We put this question to Shaykh Muhammad ibn Saalih al-‘Uthaymeen, may Allaah preserve him, who answered as follows:

No, he is not under any obligation. And Allah knows best.
