Assalam.

i wasn't going to post at all, but now I am. You MUST realize here that Prayer/ Salat is a Pillar of Islam! It Cannot be abandoned.

Many scholars say that not praying puts a person in a state of kufr (disbelief) this is based on a hadith were the prophet (saws) said, "The only thing that separates a believer from a non-believer is prayer" Not only this, but the Sahaba's of the past didn't consider anything to put a man in the state of kufr except the abandonment of prayer.

but as it is... there are differences of opinion based on whether the person denys Salah or doen't do it out of lazyness

Prophet Muhammad (Blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) said: “The pact between us and them is Salah. Whoever gives it up becomes an unbeliever”. Narrated by Ahmad and Abu Dawood.

Muslim also narrated form Jabir (radianlahuanhu) that Prophet Muhammad (Blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) said: “Between a person and disbelief and polytheism is discarding Salah”.

Abdullah Ibn Shaqiq also says: “the companions of the Prophet (Blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) did not consider the abandonment of any act, with the exception of Salah, as being disbelief.”
al-Tirmizi reported this Hadith.

The daily five prayers are among the five pillars of Islam. They come right after the proclaiming the two witnesses of Islam. The person who does not perform the prayers has no share in Islam since the

Prophet said: "The pact between us and them is prayer. Whoever abandons it is a disbeliever". [Reported by Imam Tirmizi and he grades it Sahih].

The Prophet also said: "The head of the matter is Islam, its pillar is the prayer and the top of its hump is Jihad in the way of Allah". [Imam Tirmizi and classified it as Sahih].

Whoever abandons some prayers he enters in this ruling of

Allah: "Then, there has succeeded them a posterity who have given up As-Salât (the prayers) [i.e. made their Salât (prayers) to be lost, either by not offering them or by not offering them perfectly or by not offering them in their proper fixed times, etc.] and have followed lusts. So they will be thrown in Hell". [19:59]

Allaah has commanded all the believers to guard strictly the observance of the prayers, as He says (interpretation of the meaning):
“Guard strictly (five obligatory) As Salawaat (the prayers) especially the middle Salaah (i.e. the best prayer ‘Asr). And stand before Allaah with obedience [and do not speak to others during the Salaah (prayers)]”[al-Baqarah 2:238]

The five daily prayers are obligatory upon every Muslim man and woman, night and day:

“Verily, As Salaah (the prayer) is enjoined on the believers at fixed hours”[al-Nisaa’ 4:103 – interpretation of the meaning]

The one who abandons prayer has no share in Islam. Whoever neglects it deliberately is a kaafir, as Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning):

“(And remain always) turning in repentance to Him (only), and be afraid and dutiful to Him; and perform As Salaah (Iqaamat as Salaah) and be not of Al Mushrikoon (the polytheists, idolaters, disbelievers in the Oneness of Allaah)[al-Room 30:31]
___________________________

On another note, why would you not pray? Subhan'Allah. NOT for one second has Allah abandoned you. Every second He gives you breath lets you live, and all He requires of you is that you at LEAST pray five times a day to Him. Is that so hard? Allah doesn't need us to pray to Him, we NEED to pray to Him, only I think some of us don't realize that. For all our blessings we recieve we should show our gratitude to the One who gave it to us.

Well, there's more to say, but no time to say it.

SO OF COURSE ALLAH WILL PUNISH A PERSON WHO DOESN'T PRAY WITHOUT ANY EXCUSE!!

In addition to what Sister Samiha has beautifully written :) :

The Prophet (peace be upon him) said,
"The first matter that the slave will be brought to account for on the Day of Judgment is the prayer. If it is sound, then the rest of his deeds will be sound. And if it is bad, then the rest of his deeds will be bad." [Recorded by al-Tabarani. According to al-Albani, it is sahih. Al-Albani, Sahih al-Jami, vol.1, p. 503. ]

Ruling of One Who DOesn't Pray:
If a person intentionally and consistently forsakes the prayer [out of laziness], there is a difference of opinion:
1. he becomes an apostate [falls out of the fold of Islam] and
2. he is an evil-doer; is at the doorstep of falling outside of the fold of Islam

Punishment [respectively]:
1. death
2. must be commanded to pray and if he refuses to pray, must be killed.

Refusing to pray is such a heinous act that they should not be permitted to live. If a person repents and starts to pray then this doesn't apply.

I wanted to add that Salah is a connection between us and our Creator. It nurtures our soul, comforts our heart, and brings peace to our mind. It is so special that it is the only pillar that was ascribed in the Heavens (on the night of ascension). People tend to see it as a burden when it in fact is a very big blessing for us. :SMILY252:

Hope this helps.

I want to add only a few Ayahs:

"In Gardens (Paradise) they will ask one another, About Al-Mujrimûn (polytheists, criminals, disbelievers), (And they will say to them):
"What has caused you to enter Hell?" They will say: "We were not of those who used to offer the Salât (prayers)." (74:40-43)

May Allaah swt make us of those who pray and not of those who will be asked "What has caused you to enter Hell?" from the inhabitans of al- Jannah. :astag:

It is not such a heavy burden to pray for a few minutes during the day and thank Allaah swt for what He has bestowed upon us, and continues so every day, even though so many people aren't grateful. Does He not deserve all Praise and thanks?!

"And those who strictly guard their (five compulsory congregational) Salawât (prayers) (at their fixed stated hours). These are indeed the inheritors. Who shall inherit the
Firdaus (Paradise). They shall dwell therein forever."
(Al-Mu'minûn
23:9-11 )

So let us strive for al- Firdaus in sha Allaah.

wasalaam.
