Withholding Excess Water

Rasul Allah (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) said: “Whoever denies others his surplus water or pasturage, Allah shall deny him His blessings on the Day of Judgement.” [Ahmad]

Prophet Muhammad (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) also said: “Do not sell surplus water.” [Sahih Bukhari]

Nowadays everything is considered a sellable commodity. As Muslims, we should beware of the boundaries and limits set by Allah (subhana wa ta’ala). The little money we make by disobeying Allah (subhana wa ta’ala) we will make even in His obedience, because it is a part of the rizq (provisions) He destined for us before He even created us.

Even if a person enjoyed themselves in Allah’s disobedience for their whole earthly life, on the Day that is 50,000 years long they will curse their shortsightedness, when more than anything else they will wish for shade under Allah’s throne and His blessings.

Wht about bottled water, either spring or desalinated?

Assalam alaikum wa rahmathullah......

Sis, i didnt reply you till now since i didnt have knowledge about this issue
so enquired it with Sheikh Assim Al Hakeem, and this is what he answered:

"Scholars say that this hadeeth is referring to when a person has surplus that he is not using, he must not sell it but rather he should allow people to use it.

They also say that if a person extract water or puts it in a container and work hard to get it and process it, he may sell it. "

Hope it cleared your doubt. And jazakallhu khairan for that question because of that we all got to know what it really meant.

May Allah help us to gain more knowledge about our deen......ameen ya samee ya baseer

Wow sis, JazakAllah Khayran for taking the effort to find this out.

I have another question, in most parts of the developing world, where poorer people live on farms and live on their own sustenance, they adopt "subsistence farming" whereby they harvest their crop for themselves and what is surplus they sell. But this is their only income... Their only livelihood. I suppose its a silly question

wa alaikum as salam wa rahmathullah..

itz ok sis, we all will have many doubts and queries and the clever ones are the one who clear it off instead of keeping on thinking about that

well sis, i would like you to read the last line what sheikh told.

Now letz analyse the example u said, a farmer wont earn anything from the farm unless he works on it. He get the yield or crops only if he work hard on the farm which Allah provide him. So here he put all his effort to earn a livelihood and to get money out of it. So he sells it if he get surplus and thats the reward or profit Allah provide him for his hard work.

That is permissible but in the above hadeeths it says if u have surplus of water which is bestowed to you by Allah and there is no effort from your part. Then the hadeeth says u cant sell that gift with the intention to get profit /money from that where as you should utilise it by giving as a charity to others who are in need of it.Because it is a ni'ama for u and also a test from Allah.

i hope its more clear to you know :)
