Green Brothers and Sisters!!

Today, Tuesday the 5th of June 2012 is WORLD ENVIRONMENT DAY.

Being an environmentalist, I feel an obligation to raise a bit of awareness amongst my Brothers and Sisters on this topic and this day....

Think about every benefit that we get from the wonderful, vast earth that Allah has created for us. Think about the intricate ecosystems that exist only thorugh the Will of Allah. Ecosystems that we cannot even see. But each one serves its own purpose: from the tiny bacteria buried in the earth to the huge blue whales in deep oceans.
What a beautiful Earth Allah has created for us and how we are destroying it, taking from it without giving back...

It is our responsibility to take care of it!

Islam and the environment
Allah says in the Holy Quraan (16:65-69)
And Allah has sent down rain from the sky and given life thereby to the earth after its lifelessness. Indeed in that is a sign for a people who listen.
And indeed, for you in grazing livestock is a lesson. We give you drink from what is in their bellies - between excretion and blood - pure milk, palatable to drinkers.
And from the fruits of the palm trees and grapevines you take intoxicant and good provision. Indeed in that is a sign for a people who reason.
And your Lord inspired to the bee, "Take for yourself among the mountains, houses, and among the trees and [in] that which they construct.
Then eat from all the fruits and follow the ways of your Lord laid down [for you]." There emerges from their bellies a drink, varying in colors, in which there is healing for people. Indeed in that is a sign for a people who give thought.

World Environment Day is an annual event that is aimed at being the biggest and most widely celebrated global day for positive environmental action. World Environment Day activities take place all year round but climax on 5 June every year, involving everyone from everywhere.

World Environment Day celebration began in 1972 and has grown to become the one of the main vehicles through which the UN stimulates worldwide awareness of the environment and encourages political attention and action.

Through World Environment Day, the UN Environment Programme is able to personalize environmental issues and enable everyone to realize not only their responsibility, but also their power to become agents for change in support of sustainable and equitable development.

World Environment Day is also a day for people from all walks of life to come together to ensure a cleaner, greener and brighter outlook for themselves and future generations.

Everyone counts in this initiative and World Environment Day relies on you to make this happen! We call for action – organize a neighborhood clean-up, stop using plastic bags and get your community to do the same, plant a tree or better yet organize a collective tree planting effort, walk to work, start a recycling drive . . . the possibilities are endless.

This years theme is "Green Economy: Does it include you?"

The global financial crisis that began in 2007, and is still resonant today, is considered by many economists as the worst financial crisis since the Great Depression of the 1930s. One of the key lessons we can draw from this experience is that running economies the way we’ve always done, doing business as usual, is clearly not an option. The new Green Economy is therefore a proposal for an alternative and far more sustainable way of doing business.

A green economy is described as one that results in improved human well-being and social equity, while significantly reducing environmental risks and ecological scarcities. In other words, we can think of a green economy as an economic environment that achieves low carbon emissions, resource efficiency and at the same time is socially inclusive.

Please feel free to add anything interesting, relevant hadith or ayah from the Quraan related to Environment.

Sahih Bukhari, Volume 3, Book 39, Number 513:
Narrated Anas bin Malik: Allah's Apostle said, "There is none amongst the Muslims who plants a tree or sows seeds, and then a bird, or a person or an animal eats from it, but is regarded as a charitable gift for him."

Assalaam alaikum,

Would you believe I participated in the first World Environment Day. We got class credit for it, the entire high school.

Today, I just think if they stopped bombing the world; stop polluting our foods; and stop using so much plastic it would be a kinder place.

And you are correct it is our obligation to Allah subhana wa taala to take care of His Creation.
